People have argued over this for centuries but pretty sure I can crack this today on bluesky via sarcasm.

not to pile on £9000 car guy but I wonder if he's more representative than he might seem. "graduate uni, move back in with parents, get first Proper Job and spend 50% of your pay on a Nice Car" seems like it could be a fairly common situation. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukWhat do you want from the Budget? 'I'm a single mum on £41,000 and limit my weekly shop to £40'People earning from £380 a month to £150,000 a year tell the BBC what they want to see in this year's Budget.

Another one here where the British press just smashed fuck out of a member of the public’s life for no good reason, just because they wanted to and nobody will stop them doing at. And they’re still going, even now.

The villains in this are billionaires but I don't think the right response is anti-billionaire. Any sufficiently rich person can do this, but they should be virtuous enough not to. Collapse in elite values is way more worrying to me than the extremes of wealth inequality.

This is unsettling www.semafor.com/article/10/2...

Being anti-democracy is such loser shit. Pseuds love to act smart but we've got the juice. 100s of years of being the least worst system over the long run. Pass the marshmallow test, support messy reality.

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

This is one of the larger left-of-center Facebook pages, and I do feel like a few years ago, left-of-center people on social media with large audiences were not using terms like “goyslop”?

Every attempt by a career right-wing DC politics dude to ventriloquize real normal Americans comes off as vastly more patronizing and out of touch than their target. Your imagined noble savages in Tulsa are in fact perfectly aware Cheesecake Factory's decor is a deliberately tongue-in-cheek shtick.

I've written to the Mayor of Lewisham after Landsec deprioritised the Lewisham Shopping Centre redevelopment. The scheme wasn't perfect, but losing a once-in-a-generation £1.5bn investment in our town centre raises serious questions. We need to know what happens now.

NOT NOW bird flu raging on a mink farm

ProPublica@propublica.org

NEW: A bird flu outbreak has been raging uncontrolled on a Utah mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted — instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade.

This is the same short form video addled conspiracism that has people convinced anything only ever gets planning permission because of a "corrupt" councillor or whatever. You can see people's chains of thought visibly shortening.

Currently wondering what message the UK govt thought it was sending by dressing up the Minister for Net Zero in a literal Shell logo.

The Israeli elections will determine the future of 15.5 million people living between the river and the sea. Only 10m Israeli citizens can vote. Palestinians in East Jerusalem (40% of Jerusalem's population), in the West Bank and Gaza under Israeli occupation or siege, cannot vote.

The fact that Western publics are unreasonably mad at objective trade-offs and tolerable living standards (and have to make up new words to describe a nebulous “crisis”) is bad because it generates real crises (avoiding trade-offs causes debt crises, grievance politics cause democratic crises).

“It’s real, even if it doesn’t show up in charts.” How do you know it’s real, then? How do you know that you’re not simply insisting on a reality you prefer, in the face of evidence? How would you support your view? Is it falsifiable, at all? How are you any different from MAGA in this respect?

Q: Amy Acton's mother has not cared for her in about 50 years after her step dad was indicted for raping her. Why should anymore listen to what the mother says? TRUMP: Well, I know nothing about it. All I know is the mother said very bad things about Acton. I think you have to take that seriously.

how all of these conversations would actually go

Even if this were viable as a concept (that there's an afterlife; that it allows conversations with others; that enslavers are going the same place as you), who cares? Oh, are you mad at me, Ben Franklin? Tough shit.
