One more BC thread. The NDP are going to spend a lot of time figuring out what went wrong. I think Eby never found his stride as premier, and the path to leadership was where things started to go wrong. Eby wasn't used to being the bad guy, but the disqualification of Appadurai did not go over well.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is correct, though I'll note that it's a lot easier to hold your party together when you win than when you lose

more mr. spice guy@juniorhoncho.bsky.social

well, guess all you can do is wish the BC conservatives good luck as they work to uhh (skimming thru their online presence and recent party history) immediately become hobbled by infighting over what's the right way to do racism then self immolate before any of em find out what government is exactly

Like, Conservative MLAs are happy with Lorne Doerkson now in a way they wouldn't be if he'd lost and weren't with KLF

Looking like record-low voter turnout in B.C. tonight. With 97.3% of ballot boxes reporting, Elections B.C. reports a turnout of 46.63%.

looking at early voting and mail-in-voting data is a path to madness. i do not think it is *impossible* to see something meaningful in this data if you are an expert practitioner but it is very difficult and you are much more likely to see what you want to see (or what you fear)

Also strange that the NDP still, to my knowledge, hasn't released a final platform document? They just keep dribbling out announcements in press releases, several of which don't seem to be included on their Plan page, and one of which (Surrey SkyTrain) isn't included in their costing!

Tyler Olsen@tyolsen.bsky.social

It's incredible how much time the NDP has spent on press releases given that it couldn't find an MLA to answer my questions for this story. The only thing worse was the Conservatives, who said knocking on individual doors was prioritized over talking to reporters thetyee.ca/News/2026/10...

It makes running my website very irritating because I don't know when I'll be done. They could release another promise tomorrow, or a full platform document, and there go my evening plans!

I've read so many NDP press releases in the last couple days that I've started narrating my life like them. Laef Kucheran's Plan for Afternoon Cappuccino Puts Bedtime Commitment in Question, etc.

Just so long as we get a dramatic photo of him in the window on the phone like the @mikehager.bsky.social photo of Ken Sim from 2022, I'm happy

BC Conservatives' election night advisory says there will be no media scrum w/ interim Leader Doerkson that night. "Should the Conservative Party of BC be in a position to form government, a media availability with the Leader will be arranged for Sunday." NDP Leader Eby has accused him of hiding.

Okay, looks like the Conservatives released a platform on Friday(?) and I just missed it amidst the municipal elections. (They also maybe didn't link to it from their Plan page until today?)

Oh look, it's back

Bit of a weird thing: The BC NDP's platform costing is no longer linked to on their website, at least as far as I can see. It used to have a little button on their bcndp.ca/plan page, but that button's now gone. The PDF is still accessible with the direct URL: www.bcndp.ca/sites/defaul...

I haven't seen a full Conservative platform yet, either. Last time, they released one after advance polls had closed. The Greens, of course, released full platform and costing before the debate, which is par for the course for them.

This costing was already a little strange because folks were treating it like the NDP had released a full platform, when in reality they'd only released this costing, apparently so that Eby could attack Doerkson for not having one at the debate. AFAIK, the NDP's full platform is yet to be released.

“It’s only fascism if they manipulate elections!” “It’s only fascism if they disappear people off the street!” “It’s only fascism if they take over the media!” “It’s only fascism if they jail their political opponents!” Is there even anything left?

Good to know bouba/kiki is true for image models too

However, the author has gone back and reexamined the images that seem to cause this neuron to fire, and had the revelation that in fact there actually is a secret thing in common: it's detecting pointy things.

The Hard Fork guys tragically passed but it appears their ghosts have now possessed Ezra Klein

Pretty insane that, even with this being a snap election at the same time as municipal elections, Elections BC still managed seven days of voting

When I first heard about AI being used for menus and advertisements, my concern was largely that it would be used to idealize the food and make it look better than it actually was. At no point did I imagine that restaurants would willingly put out horrific looking images of their food on purpose

Privately, every major party and politician in this province has happily tell me that they went overboard on prioritizing Twitter in the past and that it's not particularly helpful to their campaigns in the present. And publicly, they can't break their fixation on it. It is what it is.

(want to know my secret hot take? only journalists, politicians and operatives complain about elections. most people are not impacted by them beyond voting day. they aren't out campaigning or reporting. they are just living lives like normal. it isn't disruptive! except the signs)

They're facing the same problem climate scientists do, except with dumbass dormroom thought experiments instead of rigorously-tested research

These guys have spent the past 20 years meticulously calibrating their P(doom) and seem to have failed to once consider the actual political economy of how to stop the thing they’re afraid of. They thought the would just carefully explain it and the rest of the world would update their priors

Also, it's extremely maddening that media is taking AI doom, which again is a hypothetical pushed by a bunch of guys with AI psychosis, more seriously than climate change, something the actual public can actually see right in front of their faces every summer

I'll propose Higgs's Theory, so named for the premier who lost an election because he didn't believe it: trans issues are high-salience to a relatively small part of the voting public, but that small part skews heavily pro-trans. Trans people and their allies outnumber the out-and-out bigots

The economy is high-salience to everyone which is why it wins elections. Trans rights are high-salience to a group of people who skew younger and will make for good campaign volunteers if you can motivate them

Also worth noting that it's worthwhile supporting trans rights because it's the right thing to do. It's also politically savvy, because electoral politics is inherently coalitional, and you want trans people and their allies to be strongly in your coalition

I'll propose Higgs's Theory, so named for the premier who lost an election because he didn't believe it: trans issues are high-salience to a relatively small part of the voting public, but that small part skews heavily pro-trans. Trans people and their allies outnumber the out-and-out bigots

Focusing on trans issues in a just-asking-questions way doesn't appeal to the pro-trans voters because they see it for what it is: a slippery slope to full-on bigotry. It also doesn't appear to the large portion of the public who agrees with it, because the issue is low-salience for them.

This is a good example of what @ntusikov.bsky.social and I have been warning about for years: US tech companies are uniquely susceptible to extra-legal US government pressure (Google isn’t compelled to change Lake Ontario’s name.) Because of this, they represent a direct threat to Canadian autonomy.
