everyone can build their own wheels with coding agents now. you can even build wheels for others. but does it still make sense to depend on existing ones? i’m genuinely unsure. building is getting cheaper, but maintaining what we build is still an open question.

Things change fast. AI code review wasn’t great at the beginning of the year, but it’s gotten much better since then. I rely on it a lot now. Meanwhile, my value as a human is gradually declining 😅

AI is still new enough that nobody is an expert. Everyone has their own mental model, so everyone builds tools based on what they believe works. It's hard to say what's right or wrong. The result is a growing collection of scattered AI tools. Maybe we need a more systematic way to build them.

“Slow down to speed up” what a great title and talk

The Pragmatic Engineer.@pragmaticengineer.com

The keynote video from Craft Conference, titled "Slow down to speed up: what changed in the last 6 months for software engineering" is now available to view. Watch it on YouTube: youtu.be/5wks1W-auKY Or read the extended summary in today's issue: newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/slow-down-...

Using AI feels like piloting a giant robot or gundam in anime. The more things AI lets you do, the more mental energy it takes to keep everything moving. For me, three parallel tasks seems to be the limit.

AI makes it easy to get a prototype to 80%. But the last 20% still needs focused work, and that part is hard to parallelize. If you don’t make time to finish it, you can end up working on a lot of things without actually completing any of them. — That’s why I’m not productive last two weeks 😅

it’s tough for me to manage multiple SNS apps. having - x for technical - facebook/instagram for life in mandarin - threads for watching what people talking about so maybe use bluesky to talk about some AI life and non-technical stuffs 🤔

🏆 After a week of research and hours of passionate debate we have trimmed 1,200 apps down to 6 nominees for each of the App Award categories. If you are looking for inspiration to elevate your app, you can find it here: expo.dev/awards Congrats to all the nominees!

i’ve been trying material 3 expressive, but i’m still not a fan. not sure if it’s because of the color palette or because i’m too used to ios design language 🤔 not able to find one beautiful one from the list: 9to5google.com/2025/10/30/g...

I hope AI can verify the generated code itself without human back-and-forth. that’s how Expo MCP server began, and I’m excited to see more interesting ideas built on top of it.

Expo@expo.dev

ATTN Developers: your AI assistant just got smarter. The new 𝝠 Expo MCP Server connects it directly to your Expo project so it can learn your SDK, fetch docs, automate installs, and test your app visually. Available now for all EAS paid plans (SDK 54+). ✍️ @kudochien.dev: expo.dev/blog/become-...

Now that I’ve used pre compiled React Native on the Expo SDK 54 beta, I find myself very impatient with any project still building RN from source lol. Spoiled so fast.

what does memory mean for ai? for large language models, it still mostly feels like language and text. but the kind of “experience” that turns a junior dev into a senior one—built over time, through mistakes—often can’t be captured in just words.

we train ai for long hours hoping it can retain and reuse what it learned. just like how we hope senior devs’ experience can be passed down. but what kind of memory is that, really? and how can it be preserved and reused over time?

After 4 years of work, I'm incredibly excited to introduce LiveStore, the next-gen data layer I'm building for Overtone. It's based on reactive SQLite and has a built-in sync engine. Give it a try - would love your feedback!

will bring a few @expo.dev coasters there. excited to meet the community tonight.

still thinking what to build in the @elevenlabs.io & @expo.dev meetup next friday in taipei. would try to be as much fun as possible. if you are around taipei next week, join us with the legendary @thorweb.dev

AI programmer agents or whatever won’t work if they need people to actually review pull requests to land code safely. The secret is no one actually reviews pull requests. And no one really wants to. Reviews are an mostly an illusion so we look productive and responsible.

Debugging in React Native got easier today. We now have an official integration with @sentry.io so you can see errors and replays directly in your EAS Deployments. No more digging through logs or guessing at app state. 📖 expo.dev/blog/diagnos...

trying to act as a prompt engineer wasn’t so fun. the models have been unpredictable in different ways. think positive — it also brings more possibilities and new ideas.

i was wrong after revisiting the codebase. it seems not a flutter fork that not using low-level graphics library (like skia) to paint everything.

i was trying to port flutter to react-native-skia in the early days. it's just too much effort. amazing that lynx team does the great work. 👏

last week was rough, my lack of swift skills kept me hitting walls and staying up too late. with DST starting, I hope to adjust my schedule and fully appreciate the power of protocol-oriented programming

any React Native performance experts willing to lend a hand? i’ve been debugging feed scrolling perf on low-end Android for the past week but couldn’t make meaningful improvements. it’s very choppy on Galaxy A12, especially when scrolling past videos (but not exclusively). any help is appreciated!
