As per Douglas Adams, I assume the universe would simply be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. Frankly, I'm starting to think that happens rather frequently.

Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, is staying the case over Trump's effort to fire Shira Perlmutter as head of the Copyright Office ... in case the Senate passes (and Trump signs into law) a House bill that would make Trump's ability to fire Perlmutter more clear.

Sending up the bat signal (literally): Any of you criminal trial lawyers want to help me prep to argue for the suppression of evidence? Specifically, to suppress the giant digital dragnet that Batman made using Wayne Enterprises phones at the end of the Dark Knight?

BREAKING: The Supreme Court holds that the Fourteenth Amendment protects birthright citizenship, blocking Donald Trump's executive order to end it. Roberts has the opinion for the court, which is 5-4 on the constitutional question and 6-3 on whether federal law protects birthright citizenship.

MSNBC: Clarence Thomas why are you in the Capitol Building? Clarence Thomas: lol @ the mere concept of answering for the way i wield massive government power for 35 years and counting

I just remembered Roberts wrote the Loper Bright opinion as well as the two today. He's made it his mission to reshape administrative law at its foundations like a bizzaro Scalia.

There's no sugar-coating Slaughter. It's an enormously important ruling (far more important than the other three decisions #SCOTUS handed down today). It's a huge win for Trump/the executive. And it's going to have massive ramifications for the functioning of the government long after Trump is gone.

Today is a day to check in on the policy and regulatory lawyers in your life. Ask them: are they hydrating? Did they remember to eat? Do they have a punching bag within arm's length?

We have Slaughter and Cook. By a 6–3 vote, SCOTUS overturns Humphrey's Executor and lets Trump fire heads of independent agencies. But by a 5–4 vote, it refuses to let him fire Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p... www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...

Let's be clear in reporting this. SCt expressly overrules (yet another) landmark precedent in Humphrey's Executor that has been the basis of American federal governance for nearly a century.

SUPREME COURT: Slaughter and Cook. Cook: The Government has not shown that it is likely to prevail on the legal arguments advanced in its stay application. Slaughter: FTC for-cause removal violates separation of powers enshrined in the Constitution.
