The other day, I got a press release claiming that ER visits among kids linked to e-bike crashes had increased *19.1 times over* in just 3 years. It almost certainly isn't true —  but the injured children are very real. Broke down what's really causing the bloodshed and who can finally stop it.

I have a high rain tolerance and a low snow tolerance, so I can ride my bicycle almost every day in Seattle. I definitely skip some days when it has been pouring nonstop and my gloves are still soaked from yesterday.

Today today today! Come Jam Out The Vote with us at Otter Bar & Burger in Eastlake, 6pm-8pm. We'll be enjoying live music from local band Aurora Ave & have a voter registration station (where you can print a replacement ballot if you need to!) + local candidates around to answer your questions!

You can door knock to oppose these horrific ballot measures! You can text everyone you know to make sure they vote No on all 3 WA state ballot initiatives to help get the vote out. Take action! Support Trans rights by taking action!

David Roberts@volts.wtf

On my long list of things to feel heartsick about: there is a genital-check initiative on the ballot in WA this cycle, intended (as they all are) to make a marginalized minority's life even more difficult, and polling shows that it is likely to pass.

I will not be adding more reasons why fall biking is the best because I am going to be out door knocking for @niluj.bsky.social - Fall biking is a great chance to ride to neighborhoods and knock doors for great candidates!

Hot take: Fall biking > Summer biking! For every like, I will share a reason why. Let’s Go!

Creepy book recommendations no one asked for: any book by Rachel Harrison is fun to read and scary but not terrifying. I loved Cackle, Such Sharp Teeth & just finished Play Nice. Currently making my way through the anthology Never Whistle At Night and Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enriquez

My all time favorite scary/ creepy books are Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Bloom by Delilah S Dawson. I also love a lot of T. Kingfisher books, like Nettle and Bone or Hemlock and Silver.

As usual, the city council is talking about how fire and police are "chartered responsibilities." I will once again point out that the first-listed charter responsibility is actually health, followed by general safety and the overall wellbeing of Seattleites.

Riding bikes home from school yesterday we had a hard time crossing a busy arterial. She told me, “that street takes away my confidence.” It is hard to teach a child to not go when one person stops for you. It is safer to wait for a break in traffic, even if it irritates the person who stopped.

Do other non-profit organizations have AI use policies? I would love to see some examples to provide clarity for staff on when it is not appropriate. (My personal MO is not to use it all, but I want to hold space that there could be reasonable uses.)

Spending money on the Ave on 10/10 and 10/17 will show the businesses that it is a good thing to pedestrianize the heart of the U district!

Joyce Park@troutgirl.bsky.social

Probably would behoove us all to go down there this Saturday the 10th or next Saturday the 17th and buy something to eat at the tables outside!!! Show the merchants you will support them if they support pedestrianization!

No lies detected. Some Washington State climate champions would do well to read this and grow a back bone to fight highway expansion. Especially as the WA state transportation budget is overstretched, we could reign in spending and GHG emissions by cutting bad projects.

bethosborne.bsky.social@bethosborne.bsky.social

The point is that progressive leadership does not tend to result in progressive transportation policy. If groups that want the outcomes that progressives claim to care about then they need to dial up the pressure for real actions. bethosbornesga.substack.com/p/electing-p...

“He always pretended—or believed— that nothing even slightly inappropriate had happened between us”A line from the book I’m currently reading called Deep Cuts by @hollybrickley.bsky.social This is why so many men think they “are good guys” in their mind they didn’t SA anyone. But they did.

This map is awesome! I used to take the California Zephyr to college. When it was on time, I hopped on in Denver and woke up in my college town. It got me hooked on train travel.

I made another fun little @amtrak.com tool. This one shows you where along the long distance Amtrak routes it's daytime or nighttime, depending on the train and time of year! daynight.transittools.dev

The key to hosting people at home on the regular is to make it work for you! For me, that means allowing kid clutter/ some mess, cooking something that is already on rotation and allowing people to come as they are. The connection is more important than appearances/ perfection.

For other friends, they like structure. Like the first Wednesday of the month we have dinner. No wrong way to do it. Your friends like you and are happy to spend time with you, so invite them over!

#WeekWithoutDriving having a flexible job is a huge privilege & makes being a non-driver more accessible. While there are certain things I must be at on time/ in person, much of my work can be done on my laptop or phone. If I miss the bus I can still take a call while I wait or check email.

When I worked retail, being late was not acceptable and if you were late more than a handful of times you got fired. Same for food service jobs.

Day 3 #WeekWithoutDriving: sometimes you need to carpool! I am carpooling with friends to the pumpkin patch today. Carpooling takes a bit more coordination, but also can be a lot more fun!

Every single time!

Taylor Griggs@taylorgriggs.bsky.social

If you actually want to catch a bus, I don’t recommend walking to the next stop, because even if Google Maps says the bus is late, it may very well come early and pass you while you’re in between stops and then you’re screwed for the next 15-45 minutes.

A break from transportation related posts. I am obsessed with the band Mona et Toi and their record Radical Romance of the Mind! It is so good. It feels fun to find new music that I love.

Great event today for #WeekWithoutDriving walking around Marymoor Village. Hot topics included wayfinding, sidewalks, and trail access!

Move Redmond @moveredmond.org

Thank you to everyone who attended our Marymoor Walk & Talk! We enjoyed hearing everyone’s feedback on how we can improve Marymoor Village for our Redmond community! We will be having a second Walk & Talk at Downtown Redmond next Thursday, Oct 8th at 5pm! We hope to see you there!

#WeekWithoutDriving day 2: Non-drivers shape their travel patterns around the bus schedule. My bus to work comes about every 25 minutes, so every morning I am going into the office I assess which bus I can take. It varies based on how my daughter gets to school. Another time cost is planning.

Working moms have complex travel patterns that involve drop-offs and pick up and running errands, too. Yes, some Dads do this too, but overwhelmingly it is women who are doing complex trip chains. Part of why I love using our cargo bike is to make this process easier. The route can be very direct.
