Not just the fastest, or the cheapest, or the best, but the *only* possible solution to climate change is a rapid global buildout of clean energy infrastructure. If you're standing in the way of that, you're not working on climate change & should be honest with yourself about your priorities.

Well, that’s not the opening paragraph I expected.

I had ChatGPT summarize it for me, and it's still very good. Basically, the U.S. is using stablecoins as a weapon to extend the dollar's global dominance. #EconSky This part jumps out at me:

More importantly, standing by passively will result in a world even more dependent on dollar infrastructures: ➡️Build alternatives: Cooperate with other countries on interoperable CBDCs and fast payment systems, which offer a multilateral alternative to dollar stablecoins.

MiCAR offers a degree of protection, but the infamous issue of multi jurisdiction issuance remains: a USDC issued under the GENIUS Act and a USDC issued under MiCAR are the same token on the blockchain. In a crisis, holders can withdraw their funds using the safer EU version.

Our policy upshots: ➡️ Be vigilant: Treat issuers of globally circulating stablecoins as significant, so that the EBA supervises them. Use separate smart contracts or kill switches to enforce the legal differences between tokens.

We compare the EU’s Markets in Crypto Assets regulation (MiCAR) and the US GENIUS Act. The laws look alike on paper, but serve different strategies. The GENIUS Act extends the dollar’s role in global payments and tap new demand for US Treasuries, while MiCAR has a defensive purpose.

USD stablecoins are not for US citizens: they “do not offer yield and are not backed by federal deposit insurance”. “The real opportunity in stablecoins is to satiate untapped foreign appetite for dollar assets from savers in jurisdictions where dollar access is limited” (Stephen Miran).

EU dollar dependence is rooted in global pricing practices ranging from the dollar-denominated benchmarks of the London Metal Exchange and agricultural commodities at the Chicago Board of Trade to complex high-tech and aerospace supply chains (think AMSL)

The puzzle: The EU is deeply embedded in the global dollar system, creating geopolitical risks and undermining EU sovereignty. However, the EU is a large trading block and has all the institutional conditions to make the euro into an alternative to the dollar.

We think the real constraints are political and institutional. More than 200 separate bodies share responsibility across payments, investment and trade (we give you a list in the appendix). A concerted strategy needs to work across fields.

Couldnt be more timely! In @jeppjournal.bsky.social (open access), a detailed post mortem of the 2022 inflation shock, and suggestions how to do better this time.

Isabella M. Weber@isabellamweber.bsky.social

Just in time for the latest oil price spike, we published our article urging the ECB not to hike rates to fight a supply shock. Europe needs a new inflation governance for shockflation. We need disaster preparedness for essentials instead of increasing investment costs.

I feel sorry for the dentists and doctors. I also recall my presentation in 2024 at a meeting of their pension funds' asset allocators in Cologne. I delivered my usual message: Channelling pension capital into private assets is a really bad idea. They were not happy. Oh well.

I wrote this for @phenomenalworld.bsky.social on the politics of Peru's growth model in the wake of Fujimori's election. The "Peruvian Model" is praised for resilient macro stability amid political turmoil — but I focus on its downsides: how it blocks structural change and hollows out democracy.

Can the ECB stop chasing oil price spikes, please? This is the message of this important study in a nutshell. Inflation is all about fossilflation. So, we need a way to stabilize our economies that does not undermine the green transition we need, which is exactly what rate hikes end up doing.

The ECB just hiked into an oil price shock, again. In our new paper for the EP Monetary Dialogue, we argue that this needs to stop. 🧵 If inflation is a function of the energy mix (✅) and the energy mix a function of monetary policy (✅), then even a narrow reading of the ECB’s mandate ... 1/

Very interesting paper and thread by friends on the tensions between inflation fight and accelerating the transition (which is key to anchor long term inflation expectations).

I suggest a currency grand bargain between the US and China where the US says to China “We appreciate your appreciation and won’t freak out about its internationalization.”
