Always think about this when I see German stuff from WWII. Nice tank I guess, but you know that thing needs fuel and it needs to be repaired right? A Sherman might not look scary, but that won't help much when there's 10,000 of them

Thank you for all the great recommendations, keep them coming. I'll start here:

The more I read about wars the more I'm convinced they're won in huge part by producing lots of different things (rifles, tanks, drones, ships...) at scale. I'd like to learn more. What books can I read about this general topic? Now, Cold War, WWII, earlier - I'll take any recommendations

The key question here is: If these talks are happening, why isn't Europe speaking with one voice?

Jorge Liboreiro@jorgeliboreiro.bsky.social

Important: Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre held a phone call with Vladimir Putin to discuss Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing peace talks. The call was "frank and substantive".

Like US output during WWII was mad. Just the amount of planes they produced is mind-boggling. What are good books about that? Why is it so difficult to mass produce all this stuff? What can we learn from prior experience that might be relevant today? How did stuff get made pre-assembly lines?

My general position is that the EU regulates too much that could either be (a) regulated at a lower level or (b) doesn't have to be regulated at all, BUT sometimes EU regulation is amazing. My favourite example is roaming. It used to cost a gazillion dollars to make a call on holiday, now it's 0

Both of these numbers are completely insane. I don't think political donations should be banned completely but cap it at like 100k a year. No person or company or whatever, on left or right, should be able to donate $600 or $700 million. It's madness

Alright, thanks for the feedback. YouTube is so different as a medium. I've come to realise that I don't usually think in visuals. But here it's like video, photo, moving, zoom, something something movement. It's a different type of creativity, if that makes sense

Securitas@securitas.bsky.social

For my taste, it's not too much TikTok. I see a good number of YouTube videos with faster cuts and stuff.

First time I've done anything like this and I'm obviously bad at cutting etc. but generally speaking, do we think this is too TikToky? A lot of stuff is moving and there are images which I think makes it easier to watch for normies but perhaps I've overdone it? Let me know

Marcel Dirsus@marceldirsus.com

Had to put my anger about Trump somewhere so I made this video about Ukraine, Putin and international politics more generally. No guest, basically just a Twitter rant with visuals: youtu.be/cIzqXP2UQSo?...

I can't AB test multiple thumbnails because it's a new channel, but basically same question for the thumbnails. Tried to make it simple and not clutter everything with AI explosions and dark clouds because I'm sick of it. Yay or nay?

There are too many of these outbreak news tweets and I don't like it

NEW: A bird flu outbreak has been raging uncontrolled on a Utah mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted — instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade.

So which German defence firms are actually helping Ukraine? Not talking about promises or presentations, but real contributions. On this Friday, which of them are helping Ukrainians shoot down drones or do reconnaissance or communicate with each other etc? It's all getting rather confusing

Just watched a TikTok about American teachers learning how to lock classroom doors with chairs to prevent kids from being shot and despite it being only 11:05 I'm confident it'll be the most depressing thing I'll see today. What the f***

I just don't see the plan here. More bombs, and then what? We're in the same place we were months ago: Either accept hundreds of thousands of casualties and occupy Iran with a chance to topple the regime, forever war or a worse JCPOA. As far as I can see, those are the options.

Alright, it's happening. I set up a 2nd YouTube channel to talk about international politics without guests. I'm thinking ~10 minutes, mostly about things that annoy me. Naturally, we're going to start with Trump's Ukraine "policy" because I hate it. www.youtube.com/channel/UCfk...

Recently tried to convince someone to start doing video essays on YouTube. I failed, but I think along the way I accidentally convinced myself to give it a go. Just seems really fun

Podcasts will continue as usual, the solo videos will be quite rare. Please bear with me on this, they will likely be pretty terrible to start with. It is what it is, we'll just have to make it through

Pretty much! We've got to go where the people are. If not, we just get stuck writing the same thing for the same 12 people over and over again, and they're already on our side

Denmark has decided to procure Anthem missiles from the US-Israeli company Covenant, owned among others by Peter Thiel and Marc Andreessen. The rationale is probably quick delivery, but it misses the point that control with the production line may be more important than the missiles in stock.
