Dorks, it’s time to throw sand in the gears. They want us to stop teaching, we will teach in the streets. They want us to stop our research, we will use archival data. They want to send us back to the dark ages, we will be a light. We will not lay down and take this.

Exclusive: National Science Foundation staff were told today that the agency’s 37 divisions—across all eight directorates—are being abolished and the number of programs within those divisions will be drastically reduced.

AGU has joined a lawsuit challenging the firing of probationary employees at federal agencies. These actions weaken science, harm public health & the environment, and threaten national security. 🧵 #StandWithScience

I designed some 3D printed components to make a very inexpensive version of the @earthscope.org Earthquake Machine that hold a phone. It also allows for multiple variables such as elasticity (size of bands), surface roughness (grits of sandpaper) and mass (hollow brick to add weights).

This is Marco Rubio explaining how the USA promised to defend Ukraine forever if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal left after the Soviet Union fell. This is why lil marco was sinking into the couch. He was hoping we wouldn’t find it…so don’t RT right now this very second.

Cool new paper from Jeff Prancevic and co-authors. Even more impressive that Jeff wrote this up as a side project while working full time for carbon-free cement startup company.

Rivers and streams may look permanent, but their lengths can change dramatically with the seasons, according to a new Science study. The findings offer the first large-scale insights into how water dynamically moves through landscapes. scim.ag/4bkb9F2

I’m thinking we should spread this news about the firings at NOAA as far and wide as possible. Like cancer research, weather forecasting seems likely to be broadly popular across the political spectrum. apnews.com/article/nati...

This is insane. If you wonder why some of us think the rule of law is about to fall, it's this. The U.S. Attorney for DC is not "President Trump's lawyer" and its job is not to "protect his leadership" nor prosecute people who "refuse to put America first".

Today, the US stood with Russia and North Korea — and against our allies — in voting against a UN resolution to condemn Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Let that sink in. This is a betrayal of the Ukrainian people, our allies, our interests and those who aspire for freedom.

It's extremely worrying to see universities facing choices that can lead to this. Graduate education leads to new knowledge and future leaders, and even a temporary pause in some PhD programs is a huge loss. Has anyone heard any updates on publicly-funded fellowships like NSF GRFP?

Over the past month, the Trump administration has enacted dramatic budget cuts and mass layoffs across federal health and science agencies. Dr. Sudip Parikh, CEO of @aaas.org, joins us to discuss the cuts and how the scientific community can respond.

I was in Atlanta last weekend visiting friends who work for the CDC. I also learned the CDC is not participating in a WHO flu strain selection meeting (www.cidrap.umn.edu/influenza-va...), which means we'll have a less effective flu vaccine next year, and likely more flu deaths. It's scary.

The panel of vaccine experts were supposed to hold their first meeting under the Trump administration in late February. It's not clear when that meeting will now take place.

Anyone have climate change and/or mineral resources slide decks they can share with me? I'm giving lectures to future middle school teachers on climate change and mineral resources (with the goal of preparing these folks to better cover these issues when they start teaching).
