Once I had the idea that Chris Mason is doing Starmer's daily horoscope, I could not unhave it. Have a listen with that thought in your head. In terms of pacing, writing, and tone, it could not be more perfect.

Cheers to the approaching weekend! This fabulous cup is reminiscent of a medieval chalice. It is decorated with scrolling tendrils and foliage, and lapis lazuli, garnet, opal, amethyst, rock crystal, tourmaline, mother-of pearl and red coral!

Cuts and damage that have the de facto approval of the @royalsociety.org, which continues to honour Musk as a fellow despite his breaches of their code of conduct.

Your reminder that Trump, Musk and Doge cut the federal screwworm control program. And now a scourge eradicated in the US in 1966 has come back. Are you tired of winning yet?

Interesting that Burnham’s argument for less aggressive whipping is that this would “raise the status of members of parliament [and] let them appear more authentic to their constituents”, given his commitment also to PR which is somewhat inimical to the single-member constituency system.

Andy Burge 🇬🇧🇪🇺@andygjburge.bsky.social

Burnham is spot on here. If you have to threaten large numbers of your backbenchers into voting for a measure with which they disagree, you're almost certainly trying to implement a bad policy. www.theguardian.com/politics/liv...

Sometime at the end of the second century a local aristocrat got buried close to what will become Berlin. He was laid to rest with a bronze relief showing the labors of Hercules and might have been a veteran of the Marcomannic Wars. Small world! Landesmuseum Brandenburg

Stunning Iberian sculpture of a wolf head from El Pajarillo, Jaén, Andalucía, early 4th BCE. The ears pinned back and wrinkled muzzle suggest a threatening posture. It forms part of a large sculpture telling story of a hero who frees a youth from the wild animal. Museo de Jaén.

The arrival of the nuns at Nun Monkton came roughly a century after the Norman Conquest. In 1172, Ivetta of the Arches, an Anglo-Norman landowner, founded a small Benedictine nunnery which owned the village. The priory survived until 1536, when it was dissolved under Henry VIII. The village

204 years ago now. RIP Pfeilstorch.

202 years ago today, this stork was shot in the village of Klütz in northern Germany. It already had a 30-inch arrow in its neck. The arrow was made of African wood, and this first ‘Pfeilstorch’ (‘arrow stork’) played a pivotal role in the understanding of bird migration.

The governments plan to offer rapid routes to settlement for those earning six-figure salaries whilst punishing and making lower-paid workers wait appears to be based on the notion that care workers are “low-skilled” because they are low-paid - its an absolute disgrace MPs must step up to oppose it
