In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story: www.404media.co/chatgpt-keep...

Replying to @thebestsophist.bsky.social

The public notice and comment process is a fundamental part of American democracy because we have a fundamental right to have a say in the rules and regulations that govern our communities. They are using unproven tech to “make the regulatory process more efficient”

Last year I got a little bit carried away with an idea: what if I could generate color palettes for all 11,567 bird species in the world from their descriptions on Wikipedia? The result was Of a Feather, a series of prints celebrating birds, color, and my inability to let an idea go. 📊🪶

Do govt bans on social media actually help youth? Probably not. Worse, they basically advertise social media as "cool" just when teens are over it. Do teens who want to access these services find ways around it? You betcha. Here are a few thoughts: www.technologyreview.com/2026/10/16/1...

technologyreview.comKids are outsmarting social media bans. That’s not a problem we need to solve.Age gates can be staggeringly counterproductive, pushing kids to darker corners of the web. Closing loopholes will only make things worse.

it's funny to me that I just saw @mozilla.org hosted a conversation in a series called "Owners not Renters" which is maybe only streamable from X or LinkedIn? (my bad if my google fu fell short, but i looked a few ways and not even in an old-fashioned podcast AFAICT)

very reasonable criticisms of Attie from @zzstoatzz.io half-baked.pckt.blog/thoughts-on-... doesn't change the promise of the protocol

Experimenting with @attie.ai site builder. It offered to scan my history to suggest projects it could do. It launched from this one to an "atmosphere radio" app. I sign in; it scans my followers for @teal.fm users, and surfaces their play history. But it can't really make a player

This has been my vision since I started playing with ActivityPub but with atproto it really seems straightforward... except for intransigent rights holders. I've been building a fun little music "radio" app but only five test users will ever be able to use it because of Spotify's app policies

this is what gets me so fired up about atproto. The technical legibility and reliability of lexicons and DID-signed content are a perfect fit with LLM coding. Spaces could make it explode if they get it right.

I set it to gather some data on how often plays include an originUri but I think it would be hard to make it a good UX But kind of amazing that it built a single-sign-on app that does useful thinks with on-protocol data... In maybe half an hour without my full attention

Are you a social scientist using LLMs to simulate human behavior in your work? We'd like to interview you to inform tools we're creating for LLM study planning & validation. Be ready to bring a dataset of LLM simulations you've worked with. 1hr $50 gift card. DM me if interested

This is really interesting in the details but also to see the beginnings of second-order architecture changes in response to llm coding

New on our Engineering blog: Creating in-house source control. In May, we merged around 2,500 code changes per day. In September, we merged more than 30,000 per day. As a result, we became bottlenecked by developer infrastructure built for human (rather than agent) scale.

My concern with this is we'll end up recreating the failed supply-side approach to disinformation while ignoring the far more significant demand side. First is recognising the relationship between institutions, publics, and counterpublics have changed significantly.

Okay, let's be real here, Russia absolutely did interfere in the Brexit Referendum, but only in the same way all major world powers, including the US and EU, are constantly fucking about in each others elections and referenda, and always have been. That's literally just global geopolitics.

Where to even begin. Anthropic wants to "apply centuries of human moral wisdom to its models, as rapidly as possible," via crash courses with hand-picked religious thinkers. Why was one of the Jewish representatives an Israeli scholar who's defended autonomous weapons for armies and police?
