I sure hope they integrate this app into every website and search engine! While they're at it, let's value the company's stock at a trillion dollars. That way, the economy is tied to their success. I can see no downside whatsoever!

"A Face In The Crowd" blew my mind to watch! Grew up with the Andy Griffith Show, and watching Matlock with my grandfather. So to see him play this uncannily on-point, sleazy, duplicitous villain is WILD. Amazing breadth in his acting chops! The film is intensely, uncomfortably relevant too.

The other day I saw someone say ai is good because it's the most revolutionary tool the working class has ever had access to because apparently they forgot that it's a subscription to a tool owned by the capitalist class and will never be able to be used as a tool of the revolution.

At my last job, we had interns. I was 30 and they were 22 and just finishing their bachelors and I felt like I was babysitting. I once had to tell one not to put binders all over the floor because it was a tripping hazard and he laughed at me and I had to say "No, it's an OSHA violation. Stop."

Sweet Jesus. I'm about the same age now and cannot imagine *wanting* to date someone that young. And if I had such intense loser energy as to be unappealing to women my own age? I would take that to the grave with me.

"Washington claims Cuba poses a national security threat to the United States." Why does media keep repeating this? The US only said this obvious, absurd lie, after smugly declaring the real reason: they want to conquer Cuba and exploit it again. There is no good reason to help the lie!

After our flu/COVID shots, @jmkeep.bsky.social and I are both floored today. Neither of our brains are working. But she keeps insisting on trying to explain complex publishing topics to me. While routinely using the exact opposite word of what she means. It's all going great here.

I've been thinking about this all day because I don't consider myself an expert, but I run a bunch of websites and you essentially can't do anything without seeing PHP mentions the second you run a website. It'd be like saying you've never heard of Javascript or CSS or HTML.

Pyrography. Making art by burning images into wood. It was therapeutic. You had to move at a slow, consistent speed to do things properly. Forced you to find some calm and inner peace. Also took me back to how I used to sketch, before nerve issues ruined my ability to do so.

Demanding that children get used to being touched against their will by relatives is heinous. The vast majority of abuse is within families! You're teaching children to be silent and accept sexual abuse.

My abuser, a close family member, would force gratuitous hugs and kisses on me in front of others. And they'd all laugh at my discomfort and think it was so cute. This taught me as a little child to accept sexual abuse in silence. Because nobody cares if I'm touched against my will.

We keep getting these reminders that journalists don't know what the hell they're talking about. Like Politico doing a piece on their discovering FDR existed. The endless string of tech journalists who understand nothing, they just worship tech and tech billionaires.

The implication here is that if you tax billionaire wealth it just vanishes into the void. Instead of funding schools, hospitals, roads, science, etc..

Most billionaire wealth isn't in yachts or jewelry — that's just a few percent of it. Most is productive business capital: companies that employ people, build things, and fund research. Tax that wealth and you're taxing the businesses that employ us all. Cato's Adam Michel explains.

Saw someone say the purified water refill stations in grocery stores is a scam and it's just tap water but as someone who lives in a town with very tannin-tinted water? No, that is just demonstrably false. I know what our tap water looks and smells like and it ain't the same.

I think this got a big kick-off when Americans found out Chinese people don't pay property tax. And actually pay very little tax at all. 0-2% for the vast majority. But what got left out of that discussion is the hefty business taxes and public ownership of major industries to fund services.

Politico@politico.com

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

I love Garth Marenghi, and one reason is that while it pokes fun at genre fiction / authors, it never feels like it's being done with malice or snobbery. The jokes are coming from people who love the genre, and Matthew Holness becoming a phenomenal horror director & writer proved my instincts right.

Found an earwig at the door and decided to pick it up and toss it outside but my nails are so long and the earwig got stuck under the nail and I would rather that over seeing or hearing AI slop.

If you wonder why there is such a big push from the stores for audiobooks, it's because the royalties absolutely SUCK. Even though @jmkeep.bsky.social and I take on all the costs ourselves, and cut out the middlemen as much as possible, we still get basically nothing for them. The stores keep it all

From my FB feed. Elizabeth is a *very* popular romantasy author. If these are her numbers, you understand why we little folks don’t do audiobooks. (I did one. It might earn out before my grandchildren die.)

My position on generative AI remains unchanged as well. In other words, fuck off.

Our position on generative AI remains unchanged. But an increasing number of organisations within the publishing industry are using the technology. In her blog post our CEO sets out why we want to see the adoption of cross-industry standards. buff.ly/DCPZPY2

Summary: A lot of people are already using AI and we don't want them to be embarrassed and hide their use, so we think the best way for THEM to be transparent is to talk out of both sides of our mouth endorsing and normalizing AI use while pretending we're against it.

"We are deeply concerned that people within the industry are using generative AI in the shadows, where it cannot be monitored or its use and impacts fully understood." No, they should be embarrassed. They should hide this embarrassing criminal act they're doing. It's good they're ashamed.

lol what other crime would this fit for? Should we promote ethical tax evasion so that criminals can talk about it more openly? And once they're feeling good and comfortable, instead of punishing them, we'll thank them for their transparency?

This message betrays the crux of the issue, notice how many times they mention publishers. Too many supposed writer organizations are, in truth, publisher lobbies. Using the legitimacy authors provide to push publisher interests, which are not shared with writers OR readers.
