Reposting this updated article, from 2021. We need to rapidly decarbonize to save ourselves and our planet from the worst effects of climate change. www.npr.org/2025/11/19/n... I’m doing my part: installing heat pumps and trying to fight petro-fascism with election tech. What are you doing?

npr.org3 massive changes you'll see as the climate careens toward tipping pointsScientists are increasingly concerned that the planet is headed for massive, irreversible changes due to global warming. In some cases, those changes have already begun.

this is honestly invigorating—maybe because the US far right has been on the rise most of my life, maybe because it suggests why the far right being unpopular is not enough. mostly: because it gives us something we can do

Tarik Abou-Chadi@tabouchadi.bsky.social

Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different

Arts are still central to the future at the Media Lab. Alex McDowell shared his reminiscence of creating the visual language for Minority Report by borrowing from research here. So much of what they predicted has come into being, including a lot of the dystopia. Maybe not those gloves though.

Marshall Ganz: “with all due respect to math, an AI doesn’t have any idea of what it is to be human; to have emotion, and a body, to fear death.” Being human is a big deal. We shouldn’t forget it as we become fascinated with machines. We need to stay pro-human.

Hakon Wium Lie, inventor of CSS, reminds us that the Internet was designed to be distributed. We need to ensure that AI is too, and that we don’t just centralize everything into corporate monopolies.

Discussing the “overview effect” Astronaut Mike Fincke says his favorite planet is no longer Mars, it’s Earth. Rod Roddenberry agrees, and says that we should follow the Prime Directive here at home as well.

Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-3) on Democracy and AI. We are dropping the most powerful technology in human history into a system that is hollowed out. AI is a perfect accelerant for both good and bad. We need to ask not just “what can we build,” but “what should we build?”

Michael Specter warning of the potentially terrible consequences of “mirror life” spreading without ability to control it. Are there some kinds of research that shouldn’t be done, or information that shouldn’t be shared? We tend to believe that all technologies are good, but that’s not really true.

I don’t think I agree that anonymity is the cause of bad behavior online. But I do think that we need to anticipate potential harms before we go full speed ahead. I’m not a p(doom)er, but there are plenty of clear implications already from rampant AI abuse, and a bit of humility goes a long way.

Humanist chaplain @gregmepstein.bsky.social reminds us that AI is a quasi-religious story with heaven and hell, all-powerful beings and vulnerable humans, and the people selling it are trying to con us into giving up our power. But our community can fight back, together. Interfaith alliance crucial.

“AI is built on stolen labor, its spits out slop and spies on neighbors!” Great chants, signs at MA Capitol by @irreplaceableorg.bsky.social We need to fight back against rampant theft of our shared intellectual history, and environmental destruction of huge data centers. The cloud runs on gas!

We know AI is biased by race, location, and gender. You don’t need to be afraid of “p(doom)” to want to slow this shit down and regulate it a little bit. They are moving mountains to make this happen. We don’t need to let it.

We’re going to Blexas, and Blew Hampshire, and Blouth Carolina, and Blebraska!

Current Polling USA Senate Model: Democrats are at 55 seats Republicans are at 45 seats - Oct 11, 2026 -

I’m watching mid-day TV while I wait in a car shop, and saw three ads in a row bashing “millionaire” Chris Pappas, and one with AI-generated imagery of all his stock trades. John Sununu is the son of a governor and board member of Lloyd’s of London; a real everyman… How do people fall for this?

He also has a plan to not pay legislators during a government shutdown, and he calls Pappas a “congressman” like it’s a slur. Dude, you were one too! And then a Senator! And you want to be that again. I hope that Granite State voters see thru this “outsider” shtick. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/10/o...

feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

Why is @massgovernor.bsky.social working with the Trump regime to expand fossil fuel dependence? We need heat pumps and electrification, not new methane gas pipelines! I am continually disappointed in the Mass Dem trifecta’s lack of leadership. We should be pushing forward, not collaborating.

Forget grandiose talk of curing cancer - this is what AI is actually doing to healthcare. In the words of one cardiologist: “it’s bots fighting bots, agents fighting agents, a horrible dystopic future nobody wants to live in.”

Sure sounds like we need Medicare for All, so no one needs to navigate this conundrum.

There is something so unbelievably bleak about an article that calmly walks readers through how to navigate being laid off after 50, losing your health insurance, and somehow surviving the years until Medicare. What a broken country.

people are always saying anti-AI arguments don’t understand the full nuances of the technology. which is correct. but only because it stole everyone’s work, exists solely to get you fired, has made the entire internet unusable and has been forced on everyone without consent

Sam Altman replied to me on Twitter long ago, “once we invent AGI we can ask it to solve climate change for us.” Bro, we know how: just stop burning fossil fuels. Turn off the machine that runs on plagiarism and methane gas! These are not serious people. Their brains are cooked by money and power.

Genuinely abundant, cheap, accessible energy has vastly more liberatory potential than AI, for vastly more people -- especially more poor people. Which, I guess, is your answer.

Parton ("9 to 5," 1980) provides a more trenchant critique of capital than does Marx ("Das Kapital," 1867) because as a researcher, Parton correctly frames the problem of capital as exacerbating but not supplanting other pre-existing human dynamics such as gender roles. In this essay, I will
