gen AI is an attempt to industrialize knowledge work. Luddites keep coming up in this discussion, because it's incredibly relevant.
A short thread, I guess
I’m not convinced “(Generative) AI is here to stay”.
It’s massively expensive to train models, and companies are burning billions and billions of VC dollars on it with no clear path to profitability.
The idea that we should all get familiar with LLMs because they’re “here to stay” rings hollow
It had clear, simple themes and archetypal characters. Those themes and archetypes were constantly reinforced in the dialog, costumes, music, and cinematography. This made it very legible to children, which led to many of those children liking it. That is not the same thing as being a movie for kids

It's really not as mysterious as they make it out to be. If you made it through high school geometry, you're fully equipped to follow along.

for two months, I've been flying drones over Flock cameras to situation them in space and geography; I even got my commercial drone license in order to do it.
I'd like to share this project with you all: it's called Records Of Enemy Surveillance:

I still think the biggest threats from software automation have very mundane human origins, and the claims of looming superintelligence both misrepresent the tech's capabilities for marketing purposes and to provide ethical distance for company responsibility
so, if I understand correctly: it's the normal people on here who need a safe space so they can quietly talk about AI amongst themselves without being harassed about the subject by a weird cult?
ok
World of Warcraft (derogatory)
Don't get me wrong, i played it off and on for a few years, and enjoyed it for most of that time. But at some point I noticed the Skinner box, and then I couldn't stop noticing it. And that spilled out into other games, too
Vance: People hang out those hideous signs in their yard that say, "in this house we believe blah blah blah blah blah. You know, love is love, science is science, whatever. No person is illegal." That sign is such a disgusting butchering of the Nicene Creed

A while ago in a webinar about data centers I asked what happens when there isn't enough capital to build all the planned data centers. Turns out, that was the wrong question. We are being run into the ground by investors high on a hype cycle.

Your periodic reminder that people are *more* abusive online when they're using their "real names" than when they're using a persistent pseudonym and this effect has been replicated in literally every study that has ever been done
as always, every bit counts; it's a continuum, not a binary, etc.
but nice to have good news for once, ESPECIALLY on this front where it's almost unheard of
oh yeah, in terms of good news- I haven't seen anyone talking about this???
In short- worst case scenario of 4C warming by 2100 is no longer possible, new worst-case is 2.8C now
DOES NOT MEAN we just relax- the only way we got here is through hard work- but it means THE HARD WORK IS WORKING
Dudes will literally try to reinvent contract work from first principles to brute force hiring and firing instead of figuring out what the hell they expect of people and need to do to support them.
New: Regretful cities are literally covering their Flock cameras with black trash bags because they cannot figure out how to immediately exit their surveillance contracts or get the cameras taken down:

We need to take a moment to talk about what the administration’s immigration policies and “enforcement” actions are doing to children and families. Be aware, some of this reporting is devastating to read. 1/12
A patient with type 1 diabetes has begun producing his own insulin after receiving a transplant of pancreatic cells. For the first time, islet cells have been edited so they wouldn't be rejected by the patient, removing the need for immunosuppressant drugs.

Sharing some Black joy as one of the most revolutionary acts against supremacy, in all its form...this highlights the lie that is the myth of white supremacy.
Because no group of people, in this country, has more reason to be joyless in the face of ongoing harm...and we're not!

everyone is pointing out that he doesn't pay taxes, so doubling that is still zero. Which is true, insofar as it goes.
But the federal government also massively subsidizes his businesses. His effective tax rate is negative.
And if you double that, it's still bad for the "teacher in Queens"
One thing I am absolutely certain of is that Gen z is "redefining truth" or w/e exactly as much as millennials were killing whatever industry was having a bad quarter all through the 2010s
