Another surprising "seed-42 coincidence" We were reading this: doi.org/10.1057/s415... and noted a mistmatch of data in Fig2 with reported stats (e.g. the SD of x-coordinates for blue crosses cannot be 30 as reported). We extracted the plotted points to investigate... #psychscisky #science
What a pleasure to present at #ATMNE26 and connect with wonderful educators. My talk "Experimental Mathematics: Computing and Visualization for Modeling and Data Science" was dedicated to Robert L. Devaney, who died this past year. Resources: jedediyah.github.io/atmne2026/ #Mtbos #ITeachMath

Cool interview with Megan Althea Paragua after her round 2 win yesterday at the #USChessChampionship. She drew against Jennifer Yu today, and is having an awesome overall performance so far. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwKm...

The Doink It: A wonderful analogy for how "AI" is being sold in education. Don't build something people want, *tell* them what they want and make them feel bad if they express what they actually want. "As far as I'm concerned, the quality of the toy shouldn't matter when you're selling to kids."

It's back to school this week for many, so this is your annual reminder about draustinmaths.com. There are now over 1200 free maths resources, including over 100 resources for A-level Maths and Further Maths. And when you've exhausted all of those, there are a few paid-for resources too!
I appreciate the authors not over-anthropomorphizing chatbots, although there were multiple times where they referred to a chatbot making assumptions or choices. I would avoid describing text-generation this way since, at times, it seemed to imply a level of metacognition the software does not have.

New blog post! "Starting Strong: Putting Mathematical Thinking First" in math class this school year. #MTBoS #iTeachMath #T3Learns #MathsToday karendcampe.wordpress.com/2026/08/25/s...
"The Story is Systems, Not Ideas" "What’s more true is that the daily conditions of teaching pull towards meh-ness." "a story that people need to know—that in education, ideas of any sort won’t get you far. What matters is how it’s done."
I didn't like the initial run of "Sold a Story" very much. pershmail.substack.com/p/emily-hanf...

Do archives of the "Math Times Journal" exist @mctm-mn.bsky.social? Particularly looking for this reference from the 1989 NCTM standards: Day, R. P., and R. Scott. "For problem solving: consider using a spreadsheet." Math Times Journal 1, no. 2 (1987): 20-28 CC: @saravanderwerf.bsky.social

We're putting together a toolkit for teachers who want resources for a more techno-skeptical critical AI literacy. If any K12 educators are willing to share their thoughts on this topic, we'd love to hear from them. Thanks! criticalaitoolkit.org/survey/ #edusky

Hi! In July I'm once again running a free online program for K-12 math teachers called "21st century mathematics". Its goal is to help teachers to connect math they teach with some math that has been discovered in the 21st century. Pass it along! Info+register: justinlanier.org/21st-century...

"They're trying to do the thing in a way which is so general, that they can't possibly build on that. If they build on that they're building on top of confusion and vagueness." -- Bill Evans Wonderful description of how important it is to take your time when learning and build a good foundation.
Excited to be named a CSTA Responsible AI Fellow.

I never met Dr. Nancy C. Dunigan, but I have a copy of the 1981 NCTM Yearbook that once belonged to her. I occasionally get a used math book and can find information about the previous owner. She sounds like a real swell lady and dedicated educator. www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/l...
