Why would Cornel West, a man who serves on the board of a far right education group with Christopher Rufo, do this?

NEW: The group behind Cornel West's 2024 ballot push was wholly funded through Elon Musk's dark money network, according to Sludge's review of tax documents. readsludge.com/2026/10/26/m...

Thoughtful story on colleges adding football programs. While research by Jim Hearn, Alex Monday, Jen May-Trifiletti and me suggests that it isn't a panacea, colleges are doing everything they can to boost enrollment as applications start a long, painful decline. apnews.com/article/coll...

apnews.comSmall colleges are starting football programs, hoping to boost enrollment as student shortage loomsTen small four-year colleges and universities started or re-started football programs this season. The National Football Foundation says that's the most in a single year since 2013.

Mamon Saleh had two suitcases packed for college. He had earned a full scholarship to Penn, and later one to a university in Hong Kong. But visa denials kept him in Latakia, Syria. He's one of the many students who are rich in aspirations and stuck in limbo. https://chroni.cl/4ia9B5S

The College Scorecard just got a major update, including new data on students' earnings seven years after graduation and the return of post-college earnings data for all students receiving financial aid. Minority-serving institution indicators were removed. collegescorecard.ed.gov/data/changel...

Rising costs is a real problem and the writer here focuses on a factor that the university has limit control over, which is housing. But the practice of quoting sticker prices misses that most get discounts or tuition waivers for lower income. UC says most in-state students pay zero tuition.

The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

Posting here on the chance that I know someone who knows someone who can use their Pace University login to download and share their Common Data Set for 2025-26. Please DM me if you have access to that super secretive doc that most universities just publish on their websites for the world to see.

I love every aspect of this--the beautiful drawings, the pettiness, all of it.

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

“That’s actually not your job. Your job is not to design the lessons because, in fact, that’s really hard. And takes a lot of years of trial and error. Your job is to deliver the lessons and focus on the teaching and the students who are in front of you.” –Emily Hanford Disagree. Emphatically.

This week SCOTUS will decide whether to take up a case that alleges that a lottery system and percentage plan used in Montgomery County’s four selective magnet middle school programs is a form of racial discrimination. The court has not taken up 2 prior cases that made similar claims.

Am I missing something here? The IPEDS glossary created by NCES seems to be suggesting that financial aid offices determine a student's SAI. Is it not FSA that does that, using the FAFSA and tax records?

I'm convinced Newsom isn't running for President at all. Sure, he might have a committee and use it as a slush fund, but he's running to be appointed to corporate boards and fake think tanks and stuff. Just too many examples of him going out of his way to show he's not aligned with the Dem base.

Gavin Newsom backs measure to kill the billionaire tax and ban future wealth taxes Gov. Gavin Newsom isn't just fighting the billionaire tax. He's backing Prop. 42, which would ban future wealth taxes in California, too.

The One Big Beautiful Bill had a budget to "commemorate" the bill? What kind of rinkydink tinpot country do these people want us to become?

Here are the changes NCES want to make to the ACTS component in IPEDS. They're not particularly dramatic. They look like a tacit admission the the first data collection was not good at all. I'll have more to say on all this on Monday. Bon Weekend!

I love it when demagogues and conmen find out that some people have and defend their values.

after the wsj wrote off unc's investigation into its civics school as a smear campaign, one of its professors pushed back. but the wsj declined to publish his response. he thinks that's due to the same political pressure creating problems in the first place www.theassemblync.com/news/educati...

I really don't understand why the Trump Administration is focusing on the list JDV cited. I mean, Cal Tech enrolled 758 international students in 2022-23, almost all of them grad students, which is less than 4% of the number enrolled by NYU.

What even is this man talking about?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Vance: "Some of America's most elite universities bring in foreigners to undercut wages of American residents. There are 9 universities in particular we believe merit an investigation. Those are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburg, UC Davis, Cal Tech, Arizona State, and MIT."
