Working on a new raster engine for #rstats, {garry}, powered by {gdalraster}, {anvl} and {mirai}. Still messy as hell but already the performance is pretty exciting. Only for the brave right now but ideas and opinions are still welcome! github.com/belian-earth... #rspatial #remotesensing

My parents were low income so I often just browsed game shops as a kid. Sometimes mum let me get a game. It'd cost her whole day's wage and a chunk of our rent. Dad once told me to check under the car seat and Pokemon Red was there in a bag. Ownership isn't the only thing we lose with physical media

I know it may not feel it - because well... winter - but winter this year really have been crazy hot in the south east. Charts for Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart below. And it's only likely to get hotter from here, but for the rest of this year and for the rest of the century.

There are plants flowering in my local area now, in June, that normally flower in November, and this article from the national broadcaster uses words like “enjoy” and “rejoice” to describe weather which is frankly terrifying, and doesn’t even mention climate change: www.abc.net.au/news/2026-06...

There's already a lot of misinformation about this year's forecast El Niño, and particularly the prospects of associated drought. This is an excellent correction from @climatefreund.bsky.social who knows more about ENSO and rainfall than just about anyone. TLDR: Hot and dry aren't the same thing!

pursuit.unimelb.edu.auWhat is Godzilla El Niño?The odds of a ‘monster El Niño’ developing this year are now as high as 80 per cent. But that is a risk factor not a definite forecast – a big El Niño does not necessarily mean a big dry for Australia...

Really great to have our cool spaces map featured on the BBC (apps.london.gov.uk/cool-spaces/) and a shout out for London's water fountains (apps.london.gov.uk/water-founta...). Both built by @halimahexe.bsky.social using our London City Data Design System (LCD-DS) and #svelte component library!

We’re doing a *lot* of infrastructure work in Quarto 2 to enable these sorts of direct manipulation affordances in the foundations, and it’s seriously tricky work. That Emil’s extension pulls it off in Quarto 1 is bewildering. Super cool.

IT'S NOT EVEN A REAL FIGURE! THE CLAIM THAT 7.5 MILLION AUSTRALIANS TOOK SICK LEAVE IN 2023/24 IS AN ASSUMPTION PLUCKED FROM FUCKEN THIN AIR! THEY TOOK THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT THEY THOUGHT WERE ELIGIBLE FOR SICK LEAVE AND MULTIPLIED IT BY 0.8! WHERE DOES 0.8 COME FROM? IT'S A FUCKEN GUESS!

Tim Baxter@timinclimate.naruresearch.com.au

This is such a ridiculous way to frame the topic, bordering on outright disingenuous. The report this headline is based on includes employer provided sick leave as "income support". The "more than 8 million Australians on income support" includes 7.5 million people who took any sick leave.

Given February is the hottest month of the year for the Coral Sea (averages 28.8°C for 1991-2020), and it’s currently at an all time record of 29.5°C, you really don’t want tropical cyclones going overhead. Warm water = Tropical Cyclone fuel www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/clim...

The Coral Sea is currently record warm atm. The region has had its hotter year, summer and February on record, breaking record mostly set in the last two years. www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/clim...

So when thousands of women (and children) were being duplicated--including in non-consensual AI porn--it was no big deal. But it took "only a 15-sec clip" of these two famous white men to draw outrage and fear. Gotcha. Cool cool.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

It took only a 15-second clip of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt duking it out on a crumbling rooftop — made by A.I. with a two-sentence prompt and the click of a button — to draw swift outrage, and sizable fear, from Hollywood. "It’s nothing short of terrifying," one scriptwriter said.

If left unchecked, we are racing towards a world where searching for "struggling to breastfeed" makes baby formula more expensive for you in your local supermarket (that's one dystopian example anyway)

(1/11) If you live in NY, you’ve probably started seeing a new warning: “THIS PRICE WAS SET BY AN ALGORITHM USING YOUR PERSONAL DATA.” This mandatory disclosure went into effect late last year, and it’s the first attempt by a US state to grapple with a new generation of surveillance pricing.

Anyone familiar with time series animation in QGIS? I have a series of GeoTIFFs with valid (I think) timestamps in the metadata that aren’t recognized as timestamps. And the QGIS tool to automatically assign timestamps thinks a month is always 30 days. 🤷‍♂️ So I’m at something of a loss.
