I'm really glad that people found so much good in this piece. As I said in the thread, I was pretty nervous about it. If you enjoyed it or learned something from it: Thank you! 💛

Gorgon CCS is the world's largest pure carbon capture and storage operation. Since 2019, it has been weakly sputtering away out on Barrow Island at Australia's highest emitting industrial facility. You may have heard it's a failure. Do you know why it's a failure? A long article and accompanying 🧵

I know this is a privileged position to be in under this economy, but the lender on our mortgage has been eaten by a bigger fish. The first payment under the new arrangements was supposed to happen yesterday, and didn't. I am way too fucken busy this week to chase people to take away all my money.

The Australian newspaper has been claiming a "forensic audit report" shows BoM's temperature data has "widespread error". For 15 years climate sceptics have been claiming a conspiracy around the data. Is anything different this time?

The best bit about digging this fucking hole is that I just put down a layer of cardboard then immediately filled it back in. Next weekend I get to continue the hole around the corner. And after that I get to do the other six sevenths of the lawn that I haven't started yet.

Tim Baxter@timinclimate.naruresearch.com.au

I have decided that I don't really like digging in clay after I started to dig a 3m × 1m (x 50cm) bit of the lawn up. Halp.

I struggle to hold the right wing media and LNP in lower regard - and I have no doubt that Albanese's office did in fact keep a dirt sheet of a kind on Dr Haines - but the attempt to turn the current situation into a partisan attack point is simultaneously both appalling and fucking stupid.

On another platform, I saw Australian femicide researcher Sherele Moody (here, but not here, at @sherelemoody.bsky.social) link the attack to men's violence against women, and I'll admit that the instinctive response in my head was "ok. sure. but not like *that*!" It is, in fact, exactly like that.

The world is "right direction, on track" for renewable capacity - but wildly, badly off track for coal phase-out. A nice reminder: you can't assume fast renewable growth = climate problem solved, dw about it

POLL: If someone says "power bills" in a sentence like "Australian household power bills have increased by x%", do you read that to mean electricity bills only, or electricity and gas bills collectively? This has come up three times today in response to something I have written, and never before.

Women in Australia continue to pay the price for the instability of men in their orbit. Whether it’s clinical mental health issues or because their team lost the grand final, men consistently choose to vent their anger on women’s bodies.

Oh god. This is getting increasingly awful. The family of the man who attacked Helen Haines' were long-term friends of the MP with a relationship that substantially predates her time in politics. ☹️

I am terrified by what yesterday's extraordinary and unacceptable attack on Helen Haines will be used to justify. Helen Haines was and is one of the most extraordinary Australians. This attack is beyond the pale - and must be responded to - but Australia's political leadership only knows one thing.

This sinkhole is so big it would take Victoria's brown coal power stations 2.2 days to flood it with pure carbon dioxide.

Love to see the Minister caught in either incompetence or a lie by work I put out last month. No, Minister King: Your government hasn't even come close to implementing the Pepper Inquiry's recommendations on Beetaloo. You don't get to claim completion when you're less than 5% of the way there.

I asked the 12 yo to hang the washing out to dry. This is a job he has done many, many times over the years. Instead of taking the washing out of the machine, he hung out the dry clothes he found in the dryer. Then he tried to tell me he didn't know the difference when I noticed hours later. 😃

On the one hand funny/stupid/whatever. On the other, who the fuck is teaching my son this kind of weaponised incompetence as a life strategy? He sure isn't learning that version of masculinity from me. Stay on your toes people! They are literally coming for our kids.
