While I usually perceive scope creep as a negative thing, I have spent so many evenings making Sue move in more fluid and fun way. Juggles! Dodges! Specials! Combos! Throws! I think I am finally at the point in which I can focus on building the world for her to wreck. #gamedev #indiedev #godot

Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

Learning to draw is fun. When working with kaijus I encounter some limitations in attack animations. How do I turn those short stubby arms into big swings? I really wanted to give Sue a DP and that forced me to push the stretch hard. Still, it reads fine in motion. #gamedev #indiedev #pixelart

Normal companies spend months in meetings, strategy sessions, market research, stakeholder discussions and board approvals before making a major business decision. Me: hm maybe Kenney Shape should be free lol

Kenney Shape is now FREE! (and it'll remain free, forever) ✨ Previously a paid tool, I'm releasing it as a gift to the community. Today's update will be the final one, with no further updates planned. That way I can focus on new software & projects! kenney.itch.io/kenney-shape

The Tiny Kaiju Game gets it's first explosion/fire! Trying to learn art - pixel art in my case - gives you opportunities to study the greats. For this I was inspired by the amazing Metal Slug series. Maybe I overdid it a bit, but I think it's a good start! #gamedev #indiedev #godot.

The explosion start in particular feels bit massive compared to the tiny fire I get afterwards. Maybe I'll split them off into two separate effects in polish phase. Still, I am really happy.

When adding juice to your ultimate I had to ask myself - how do I make this feel powerful, without it having to be overpowered in gameplay while still fitting the kaiju fantasy. Sue shooting a beam so powerful that it explodes surroundings into space seems perfect. #godot #indiedev #vfx #gamedev

Throws were quite complex, but I'm done! You can throw enemy into terrain, destructibles, even other enemies. Also some test buildings for #kaiju destruction added. All the basic mechanics are in, the combat feels FUN. Now we go on to the asset creation and level design. #gamedev #indiedev #godot

Added new movement options - charge and spin attack. The combat of The Tiny Kaiju Game feels more and more fluid. Only couple more left - dodge, throw and special, and I'm starting to work on art and level design for the demo. #indiedev #gamedev #godot #kaiju

Getting rid of proprietary software, subscriptions and services arc officially started. Time to degoogle myself. 3D printed rack feels great. Cheap second hand hardware to host my shit on even more so.

And yeah, sure, I've cancelled my Unity and Adobe subscriptions ages ago, but the convenience of google drive, office suite, spotify etc has kept me hooked for too long.

We are moving to a new location, and one of the thing we are bringing is a kid's bed. I unscrewed majority of it with a power tool but then there were two very specific hidden screws that I couldn't get to. Luckily I had a spare one of those with me and it just barely fit. Felt triumphant.

As a person who used to be THAT KID, reading all about astronomy, looking through telescopes, religiously reading any space related news, it takes a special kind of person to make me root against rockets. And yet here I am.

Capitalist states are gonna call it terrorism when people rise up against the billionaires destroying our societies & our world, when people resist fascist anti-immigrant violence and the ultra rich stealing our resources & ruining our economies. That will occur but it cant stop people resisting

Activists damage the building foundations of data centre 🫡 > The group said that they threw water balloons filled with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid, salt, and acrylic paint at the under-construction facility.

While yeah, all the newer systems and consoles running on Ayn Thor are really cool, the capabilty to easily run 486+ era games in DOSBox is that little extra that makes it magical for me.

I think given the scale @godotengine.org is now at, this is an incredibly incisive approach to combat generative AI's awful impact on people, code, and communication. Also focusing the ban policy on access & pull requests is a smart way of eliminating huge parts of the problem in a practical way.

Godot Engine@godotengine.org

For years we have been overwhelmed by the volume of code contributions we have to review, especially from new contributors. AI has made the problem much worse. That's why we are taking steps to reduce the burden on maintainers while still welcoming new contributors: godotengine.org/article/cont...

Here is the same thing without position and scale tweening. The texture on the right defines what part of the button will be pushed when pressed. When pressed, An "offset_factor" shader parameter is tweened: UV.y+ texture(gradient_mask,UV).r-0.5) * offset_factor #Godot #GameDev

Holy carp! Katamari x Carrion! So cool! Gotta love kaiju games!

Here's a cool indie game that got lost in the noise this week. 👇 ROLLA is a Katamari-like, horror B-movie inspired arcade destruction game where you roll around a city as a mass of flesh. It's got the sauce. One of my fave reveals this week. 🍝 (Wishlist ROLLA on Steam)

About 10 years ago I hear the last call of golden oriole around these parts. More and more cats started roaming in the fields and I thought that the birds stopped coming. But this morning I heard the unmistakable whistles of what is one of my favorite birds singing outside my window. I am so happy.

Ok, screw cutscenes. How in the everlovin flippin heck do ledges and cliffs in a 2D beat em up work? I spent the entire night thinking about edge cases regarding both in-game jump/movement pseudo-3D physics and AI interactions and I'm barely conscious now.

Sometimes it's the features you don't expect that are the most complex. In my game, that was the internal scripted event player I designed the framework with it in mind, with all the inputs routed through hot-swappable components, but even basic implementation still was somehow more than I expected

Ever had that moment when you fix one bug just to discover that its quirks masked errors from untold layers of cross-related bugs and the code that you were actually quite proud of turns out to be a jenga tower one block removal from collapsing? Because oh boy did I. #indiedev

As I'm getting deeper into the project and started adding more complex overlaying and interacting systems, I have decided to take some time off to do a little cleanup. Little cleanup had me working till 2:30am yesterday and I'm still in the trenches, with like 50% more to go. Ouch.

Adding support for multiplayer. Different kaiju color schemes and multiple input sources support is ready. Now only thing left is to actually spawn multiple kaijus and have enemies interact with them properly. This will be easy, surely. Right? RIGHT?

Experimenting with hue shifting shader is fun. While not perfect, as I am looking at the results, I can get like 8 distinct-enough colors. Ok, now the question presents itself: dare I implement 8 person multiplayer in my beat em up? I'm not sure if I'm crazy enough. #indiedev #godot

Testing how different Sue colors for multiplayer would look if I'd hue-shift 4 main colors in fragment shader. Not bad to be frank. At this point I did it by eyeballing it in aseprite, but the principle seems sound.
