It is worth knowing that a similar photo of DNA was taken about a year earlier by Elwyn Beighton working in the group of Bill Astbury. seehttps://digital.sciencehistory.org/works/zys80b4
In the 1950s, Lipscomb & colleagues unpicked the structures of several boranes using low-temperature x-ray crystallography, determining they shared two electrons across three atoms.
This accounted for boranes’ unusual geometry & unexpected dipole moment.

As many of you know I have often written about misuse of crystallographic terminology in the literature. Probably the most prevalent failure is in distinguishing between lattice and structure. But it gets worse: see doi.org/10.1107/S205.... Enjoy!
For those interested in cryocrystallography I have written an article for the @IUCr newsletter on the history of the Cryostream. See www.iucr.org/news/newslet....
The @crystallography.org.uk Chemical Crystallography Group Autumn Meeting is being held online on October 27th, registration is open. The theme is Crystallography Under Non-Ambient Conditions.
Abstracts for presentation welcome, including from Early Stage Crystallographers.
