Spite is such a strong motivator.

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

I'm one minute and five seconds into the new Little House on the Prairie, and I'm already super pissed off at their costuming department. What the HELL is that knitted shawl doing on Laura's shoulders, done in garter stitch on big needles, out of variegated yarn?!!!

How do you even get hired to do costumes on a show like that and not have the most rudimentary ability to do research about what garments and materials were available/likely at the time? Man, I was just simmering down from my rage over the Outlander knitted nonsense, and here we go again.

So, I know a frankly ridiculous amount about wool, but there’s always more to learn. Today I learned for the first time that when wool gets wet there’s a little chemical reaction that generates a small amount of heat. Isn’t that cool?

Today I went into town to get supplies: ammonia (for fermenting plant dye), wool wash, 3 balls of black yarn for an art project, and from the second hand shop I got 3 used frames that I will fill with freeform crochet, 2 hanks of yarn, and a really nice basket. Felt like an alien amidst the locals

wearing their Scandi minimalist outfits comprised of no more than two of the five acceptable colours, but now and then a queer no more than two of the five acceptable colours, but now and then a queer teenager passed me so I knew I wasn’t alone.

It’s amazing how much you start to notice when you just start paying attention to something. I’ve been casually, and without a lot of active study from any guides or experts, paying attention to the natural world just in my neighborhood over the last few years.

There are magpies building an apartment complex right outside my balcony, so I noticed the sudden uptick in activity, just a week or so ago, and I also noticed the blue tits making new calls, frequently and loudly. I assume these are territorial calls.

All of this has coincided with the expansion of hours of daylight. Even though we aren’t at the equinox yet, it’s still noticeable that the light is increasing drastically, week by week, and so it makes sense that the birds would get going on laying the foundations for having babies.

And I found that I quickly learn things that I remembered and observed patterns that appeared to be repeating. This is precisely what my human brain has evolved to be very good at, so it’s no real surprise that this has happened.

And I found that each time I learn a set of things and some related patterns, I start to observe novel things, and then build complexity into that pattern. For instance, this year I have noticed for the first time that the birds start their nesting behavior in February.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention. The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.

From October 2025: “I might invoke Edward R. Murrow, but they remember him. They don’t have any goodwill toward you. They don’t know who you are at all. And they are not going to defend you when you screw up.” Read more from @lopatto.bsky.social:

There’s a lot of drama happening here on the water. There’s a pack of about 100 cormorants hunting cooperatively, a half dozen seagulls flapping above them, hoping to catch some of the spoils of that hunt, and two hawks circling above, presumably hoping to catch one of the seagulls unawares.

I have survived IKEA. I had to go, I needed some stuff for my craft market setup, and I planned carefully beforehand what I was going to get. And I took my ADHD medication which helped me handle the seriously overstimulating and impulse-generating environment. I did buy a few things I hadn’t

A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

I assume he’s doing Viking clothing or something like that. So now I’m making some samples from some wool that I have that is perfect for such a use. I have some Helsinge wool with a lovely long, staple length, and some Faroe Island wool.

Give a man a fish and someone with a thousand fishes is going to bitch about people getting free handouts. Teach a man to fish? Yeah, that person with a thousand fishes is going to bitch about that too.

People are kind of hilarious. Today I found an antique spinning wheel at a secondhand shop in Sickla, and I was taking it home on the subway. This, of course, garners some stares and comments. One woman sat down next to me and asked me about it, and I enthused about my find.

Those are the parts that actually do the spinning, and without them you’ve got nothing. Also, this wheel is completely missing the tread assembly, so the only way you can turn the wheel is with your hand. anyone who knows even a bit about spinning wheels would see quickly

She asked if I knew how to spin, and I told her that I did. Then she gestured at the wheel and said “well, it looks like it has all its parts, so that’s good.” Reader, at the moment she gestured, the front & back maidens, the flyer, bobbin, and whorl were in my bag and she couldn’t have seen them.

This video from Portland is a metaphor for what is going on in America. ICE trying so hard to get Americans to cross a line and if they don't, dragging them across the line and violently attacking.
