Bungie friends: you deserve better. We as gamedevs deserve better. The industry deserves better.

NEW: Bungie is planning a significant layoff following the end of Destiny 2's development. Destiny 3 is NOT in active production. Some Bungie staff are pitching and prototyping new ideas including Destiny games, but none are yet greenlit. Story: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Boss 2 down (1-shot 💪🏽). Man, Saros and Returnal are so weird. A kind of…semi-rogue structure that…does it make sense actually? Some upgrades and stats and whatnot that are, like, fine? Run variance but just…a little? And then shooting and dodging and enemies that you can’t stop going back to again.

A few mins late clicking on a work meeting because I was in the middle of the first major boss of Saros. Eveything turned out fine though. I won.

as long as john roberts has his majority, there is simply no pro democracy reform that will survive the supreme court. none.

I have no opinion on this. I will not be tricked into mocking or humiliating a cis man on the internet for free.

Amoura@getamouraapp.bsky.social

I'm a cis man building a trans-first dating app called Amoura. I know how that lands. Worth saying upfront before any of the rest. The short version of what I'm building below.

Whenever something similar to this (player-perceived power being a one-way ratchet) came up on WoW, I called it "the flying problem". Basically, whatever new thing you want to try or change you want to accomplish, players can't be less able to fly than they were in 2007.

There’s a trap that happens to early access games, which is that making any element harder spawns enormous backlash. Famous example is Darkest Dungeon. I’d kind of imagined STS2 would be immune to this, but I suppose I don’t know why exactly I thought so. youtu.be/Os5uLJbcDP8?...

I'm a game designer, and glimpsing his game show made me realize he doesn't entirely grasp the concept of a game show. So I imagine an employment lawyer must look at him and realize he probably doesn't understand exactly, in a important sense, what an "employee" is. It's reverse Gell-Mann amnesia.

Saving this to use in my gaming sub-hobby of trying to get my friends to play Outer Wilds

Joshferatu Scare@joshscherr.bsky.social

As much as I love OUTER WILDS, it is not an easy game to get into for some folks - there's very little direction & the navigation controls take some practice. After a number of friends bounced off the game, I wrote up some tips which I've revised/added to over the years. Maybe they'll help you too?

What's going on here is that, call it EA or no, players form an attachment to the game and the experience they have in it. Challenges they put meaningful effort into and defeated, expectations formed by experience of what works and what doesn't, etc. The abstract "better game" become less important.

So you have to strategize around how to roll things out to players, not just about the game. Going out with experimental and probably overpowered cards, high difficulty levels that don't have the juice yet, and anemic placeholder bosses, was setting themselves up for trouble.

To be clear, the cause isn’t the game being hard. It’s the game, or any part of it players feel, being made hard_er_ after EA has started. The feeling of being nerfed is deep emotional reaction that overrides facts like “but it’s EA” or “the game is better balanced now”.

The video argues (I think correctly) that between two equally hard final bosses, one is a hotbed of Steam fury and one is not much commented on. And the difference is that one was added in a patch and one was there from the first time players saw the game. So one is seen as responsible for setbacks.

Obligatory note, of course, that also it wouldn’t matter anyway if trans women were really good at sports. If we have women’s sports, I tend to imagine that women who are good at sports are people that we want to have participating.

Even now (almost 20 years later) this makes me feel better about not getting a federal clerkship while I was at HLS (Like, I knew about FedSoc before this post, but just reading it put this way is cathartic)

sarah jeong@sarahjeong.bsky.social

The "aha" moment for me was when I was told, explicitly, that FedSoc is for ambitious people who want a federal clerkship and have no principles to get in the way of getting one

For folks who watch indie game industry news, Slay the Spire 2, in early access, outsold the *lifetime earnings* of Hades 2 AND Silksong in its first two weeks alone. Soft estimates suggest they are on track to make $250M over the next 12 months; a new record high for the Godot engine.

tbh watching cis people get arrested on trans people's behalf is more heartening than I would have realized. It often feels like it's just us, when the going gets tough. If private businesses risk themselves to continue to allow trans people use of the correct restroom, it'll mean a lot too.

The 6 arrested yesterday, along with the 9 arrested Wednesday, brings the total to 15 arrested at the Idaho State Capitol building this week in Boise while resisting the extreme anti trans bathroom ban, Idaho HB 752. This law is the most extreme in the country but citizens are not going silently.

Alright, I’ll be visible. Openly, it’s hard to celebrate “visibility” without discussing how the original idea, visibility from cis people, has become something of a curse by now. But visibility between trans people is more important to seek out than ever, and this day should be about finding it.
