Another danger of climate change just dropped.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

A study of Maui survivors found high amounts of toxic metals in their bodies for as long as 18 months after the 2023 blaze. Another study found the Eaton Fire’s smoke had lead concentrations up to 250 times higher than normal.

This is mostly due to groundwater extraction btw.

You will be shocked to hear that I talked about water systems' limited role, past and prospective, in wildfire fighting. The whole episode is in front of a paywall for at least the next 6 weeks.

As winter approaches, rising energy costs could put even greater pressure on American families. In a TIME op-ed, Faculty Director Sanya Carley examines how the war in Iran is driving up heating costs—and why households already struggling are likely to feel the effects most acutely.

Hurricanes, wildfires, and flooding pose growing risks to Latino homeowners, who often face greater exposure and barriers to recovery. This Urban report explores the impacts and offers policy solutions to enhance resilience and long-term housing stability. #Climate #Housing #Communities

More broadly, join us on the heels of election week for a timely conversation about climate policy, civic engagement, and the personal stakes of environmental action.

My hot take on this is that it certainly contains some interesting details, but: 1. Didn’t actually move the needle vs exhaustive, blow by blow reporting by @latimes.com et al 2. The recommendations are a laundry list with no prioritization 3. would have been much more useful 6 to 12 months ago.

Pretty damning report on all the things LA city and county officials did wrong during the early hours of the Palisades and Eaton fires — confirming a lot of @latimes.com reporting. Speaks to need for huge investment in disaster response as climate change intensifies. www.latimes.com/environment/...

This is a big deal for building decarbonization! AB 2313 has the potential to both speed up appliance replacement and help shift the incentives that keep gas utilities from coming to the table to confront long-term decline. Congratulations to all the advocates!
