👋 new followers.
I guess I can’t do worse than intro myself through my latest video, recorded and posted today, reflecting on how I’m feeling as a queer [climate] science communicator. Found it strangely cathartic, and if you’re involved in #SciComm yourself, I hope it acts as a pick-me-up ❤️
Unscripted and unedited, I lay my thoughts and feelings bare on current affairs. The re-election of Trump, effective concession that we'll miss 1.5C climate target, increasing hostility to the science community, step-up in anti-trans actions and rhetoric.. It's all overwhelming.

Oh this is sad news. When we lose anyone its tragedy, and of course Walter was one of the originals.
I had of course heard rumours that he hadn't been well for a while. Our deepest sympathies to Walter's family and friends at this time
Walter Koenig - 1936 - 2026
#RIP#NuclearWessels
My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

New Geogramblings post 🌍
What can comedy do for climate communication?
Stuart Goldsmith and I talk climate dread, safe spaces, guilt, memes, beavers, street wolves, giant robots and finding the work we are equipped to do.

Approx 600 homes w/o power here atm due to #StormBoelo - except ours is the only one lit in the neighbourhood due to having home batteries with emergency power. We’re lucky.
Govt: “Stock up on food and water this winter” is just a 🩹. Where’s the investment in resilient homes for the vulnerable?
💬 “I started talking about it on stage because that’s all I know how to do.”
Climate comedian Stuart Goldsmith explains how anxiety became material, then purpose, in the latest #CoffeeGeogPod.

Best way to understand MAGA is as a version of the Star Trek episode "A Piece of the Action" but instead of basing their society around an old book about gangland Chicago they based it on the Epstein Files.
Trump: "Ramaswamy put up a very powerful Ad about a mother saying that her daughter, Acton, is a liar, and much worse. The Press is trying to get him to 'take down the Ad.' Frankly, anybody whose mother spoke about daughter that way would normally lead to the daughter being precluded from serving"
An amazing day with a bunch of Suffolk-based @climateambassadors.bsky.social at @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social's Foxburrow Nature Reserve. A rustic little site perfect for an intimate day of networking. SWT's Sophie MM a great host, who ran a lovely outdoor activity exploring nature through poetry.
The feedback was lovely. Smiles, connections made, and recharging of souls.
Want to be a part of such a cohesive and supportive community? An education setting looking for help with #ClimateAction? We’re out there… just ask! Visit climateambassadors.org.uk and click “Join in”.

We practiced some National Education Nature Park habitat mapping, heard from Let's Go Zero about joined up support and the ‘oil-heated settings’ programme, and shared stories, ideas, learnings and wisdom. All with a hearty vegan lunch buffet to boot.
We overrun a little, but you could feel the sadness that the day had to come to an end.
Thanks again to Sophie for hosting, and thanks to my lovely sister project colleagues Nige' (@letsgozero.bsky.social) and Phoebe (National Education Nature Park) - a day of ‘how we do this together?'

We played an icebreaker game I called “Ambassadors Assemble!” where we got to know each other’s skills, passions and expertise using scenarios of the kind of help education settings might need.
💬 “Comedy is a social lubricant and a storytelling lubricant.”
Stuart Goldsmith joins me to discuss climate dread, difficult truths, safer conversations and how laughter can help people remain engaged.

We’ve started up a new family habit on Tuesday evenings - “family reading night” - where we each curl up on the sofas and silently parallel read for about 30 minutes. It’s absolutely lovely and I hope it sticks. But I think the kids have taken to it because we’re reading our own books with them…
So a bit of fun for you - here’s the four books being read at the moment.
Have a guess, which is mine, which is my partner’s, which is my youngest’s (9yo) and which is my eldest’s (12yo)? 📖
What happens when a comedian turns climate dread into a career?
Stuart Goldsmith joins me to discuss humour as climate communication, finding a climate side hustle, making difficult subjects safer, and why every street needs a wolf.

Calling teachers & educators in the UK. How is the climate and nature crisis affecting you, and your work in education?
@geogramblings.com and I are running an independent survey to get a clear picture. It takes 10 mins and is anonymous.

What can a puddle, an overheated classroom or a patch of grass teach pupils about climate change? Quite a lot, with the right tools. A new programme will put young people at the heart of investigating their own schools.
Kit Marie Rackley reports.
Why does that corner of the playground always flood? Why is one classroom so hot?
A new ClimateReady Schools programme puts young people at the heart of finding practical solutions to climate change.
Kit Marie Rackley explains the initiative.

12-18 October is #FloodActionWeek, led by the #EnvironmentAgency. This #CoffeeGeogPod Espresso and blog outlines why it is important, the resources available, and the actions you can take.
In schools I find it is often the Geography department which is more enthusiastic to cover climate and sustainability challenges, including nature-based solutions, than the Science department. As a geoscientist I find this confusing. The scientific evidence is clear, we need urgent, tangible action!
"We see the same tendency at the individual level, with greater faith in technological solutions going hand in hand with less engagement in climate action. Yet technology cannot substitute for the broader societal changes and large-scale shifts in consumption that are also needed"
I was tempted to pirate HP, curiosity and all that. But @jessiegender.bsky.social is right - think of the amount of times HBO commented on GOT leaks and downloads, just as an example.
They DO track these things, and even that drives interest.
Let this show die.
Trans people deserve better.
@geogramblings.com Can you share this new research report please? nbn.org.uk/blogs/nbn-bl...
It might appeal to groups interested in climate activism, citizen science, inclusiveness, therapeutic walking, #wellness#STEM and environmental education
Dr Meganne Christian shares her unique journey from studying industrial chemistry to living at Concordia Station in Antarctica and joining the European Space Agency's astronaut reserve. A fascinating discussion and insight in this latest blog post. #Space#Astronaut#Antarctica
With regret & apologies that the recording of this episode has been postponed indefinitely for now due to unforeseen circumstances.
Thanks to all those who posted Qs. Hopefully we’ll get this rescheduled for another time and I can put your questions forward then.

So what? We have photos of Earth taken from space every day.
Ah, but *this* photo was taken by a spacecraft ON ITS WAY TO JUPITER.
Islamophobia is wrong.
Antisemitism is wrong.
Terrorism is wrong.
Racism is wrong.
Killing children is wrong.
War crime is wrong.
Occupation is wrong.
GENOCIDE is wrong !
Can we all agree on this?
The Terrorist regime ruling Israel is committing a genocide against Palestine.
This is not directed against all Jewish people, because that's nonsense.
All of those who oppose Genocide should oppose the current ruling body of Israel.
This is not a question of opinion.

S.Peggie loses on every point apart from the administrative failures of NHS systems. GC lawyers have wasted NHS time and resources for a vanity project with net-zero result for them or Peggie. The aim is never to win legally but use the story to lobby politically through media.
El Niño is an absolute monster we have now surpassed the Super El Niño of 2015-2016 with peak expected in November-December 2026.
We can’t truly know how significant the 1877-1878 El Niño was in equatorial Pacific clearly very significant, but this is at least strongest event in ~150 years.

I feel like one of the most radical, best and most rebelliously good things you can do right now in the informational online space is just....give people credit, love, support and shoutouts. Even if they just inspired you or prodded a thought you built on, name them and thank them loudly.
