Oh, no, it's finally happened. I'm listening to the Decemberists. Wildwood did what a full decade of being in my 20's in the 2010's didn't.

Go see Wildwood. Seriously, don’t wait—go see Wildwood. What a piece of art. The love for the manual craft, for story that doesn’t hold back, for filmmaking that is not here to answer to stockholders, it weaves all through it. Incredible stuff.

I will be frankly shocked if Wildwood is not top film of the year. It's such a thrilling epic, with so much heart, clever storytelling, great characters, and fucking gorgeous craft. Seeing it in a theater transported me back to seeing Castle in the Sky for the first time. It's that good.

See this one in theaters, folks. See it huge. Be blown away. You'll be giving yourself an experience that you'll measure art by for a while. And this one deserves to blow up. It's gorgeous and handcrafted and it FEELS so loved and personal. Give yourself this wondrous antidote to slop poison.

Yikes. This is just offloading the important bits of your life. It's not even the cognitive bit (which I think is probably quite bad) that's the issue in this case. This is just giving up an opportunity to do love. That's... well, gosh, I guess it's dystopian.

The last roses of the year are clinging on despite the increasingly inclement weather. A reminder that it’s possible to be soft and tough at the same time.

Never fear, it won’t be too long before we hear more from Captain Choi!

I only slightly hate you for doing so much exposition with Soo-Jin in the previous episode and not coming back to her at all here.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Finished a new script of The Harbingers today, one that I think has something to make everyone angry! Who wants to guess who the focus character for these shenanigans is?

Friends who write plays, what is your preferred software/program for that mission? Final Draft, my usual weapon of choice, has stageplay options, but they don't really make the work look like the play scripts I'm familiar with as I'm writing. And with my brain that means writing will not happen. 😅

The phrase they keep using, “suicidal empathy,” means they believe those who help vulnerable people are actually dangerous. “Suicidal empathy” means maintaining vulnerable people is like failing to prune a plant: only by excising the sick parts can the whole plant thrive.

Does it make sense to deport a man who overstayed a visa but otherwise has no criminal record when his deportation means shutting down a food pantry that serves meals to 7,000-8,000 needy people a month? Does choosing not to exercise discretion in his case make America greater?

You get to a coffee shop. Look around. You notice there are eight people in line to order, but only three available tables. There is no discernible way to know if the people in line are getting orders to go or to stay. Is it acceptable to put your stuff down at a table before you buy something?

Gabriel Urbina

(Yes, I’ve asked something like this in the past, but I’m fascinated by how opinions wax and wane on this issue.) (Me posting about it is almost always caused by having a surprisingly vitriolic argument about it irl. And that keeps happening, so I keep posting about it. 😅)

Re the last repost, one of the things that has stuck from my time in the behavioural science snake oil mines was an experiment where if people planned a week of movie viewing they would pick a mix of genres, some 'highbrow' etc but if they picked day to day it was all the same stuff

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

I think this is a really important thing what finally got me to complete delete my twitter account and remove it from my phone was when enough of the people I enjoyed following had left the platform as long as people still get enough value out of who they can find there, they’ll stay

Ian Coldwater 🧊🚫@lookitup.baby

I left X *because* I had a large following. People told me I was the reason they were staying on there, and I didn’t want to be responsible for 100k+ people sticking around for abuse, CSAM, and Nazis. Simple as that
