You'd think Google would lookup who preordered the Fitbit Air and roll out the new Google Health app to those users first. But no, now I have a $100 wristband that does nothing until they pull my number.

It's been long enough since I left my last job that when someone asks what I do, I've started saying I 'used to be' a software engineer. The shift in language feels heavy. Hopefully that changes within the next year. I've been taking time to chase after health issues — turns out there are many!

Gemini needs a better way to organize chats, especially by automatically separating 'digital assistant' chats from manually-created ones. This should be a uniform (in look-and-feel and functionality) feature across both the web and mobile apps.

I am generally against “everything needs to have an app” - I do not need my dishwasher to text me - but I will reluctantly grant it in the case of my garage door mostly because my brain takes about five seconds after it’s out of sight to forget whether I closed the damn thing

I love the modern Web. Visit a website on mobile and get assaulted by pop-ups for sharing location and receiving notifications in addition to the site's popups for cookies, promotional materials, and the kitchen sink.

The cycle of owning a CPAP machine: 1. Take a few days to get your mask fit just right to minimize leaks. 2. Have a few nights with a perfect mask fit. 3. Weekly cleaning time! Completely disassemble the mask to clean it, losing that perfect mask fit you had. 4. Rinse and repeat, ad infinitum.

I'm a few days away from my one year anniversary of being unemployed. What a surreal feeling. I might as well refer to this period as my mid-career retirement. Hopefully there will be a second half to my career and I didn't ruin it by voluntarily taking time away. 🤞

I should say: voluntarily taking time off before the job market for software engineering tanked, AI blew up, and Trump was reelected. My state of mind a year ago was way too optimistic.

It's surprising how many scam websites are under Google's sponsored shopping items. Search "riding lawnmower from Walmart" and you'll see tens of them.

Sigh, Google is being Google and is killing Gemini's usefulness unless you pay for the $250/mo plan (which is untenable for me at the moment). I've been a happy Pro plan user for ages now, and now I'm suddenly getting full day rate limits? Why am I paying for this?

Being a Software Engineer Pro: If the software you need doesn't exist, you can build it yourself. Con: If the software you need doesn't exist, you can build it yourself.

A downside of working with a laptop on my lap is that my belly hangs over a wee bit, causing the touchpad to think we're doing a multi-touch gesture now.

After spending days designing an authentication system for SMS and social login, I completely understand why services like Auth0 exist. However, I do like the freedom of not having to learn that service's APIs and SDKs and how to get our custom UI to work with those instead of using their UI.

If this app takes off, we don't need to worry about the MAU (monthly active user) premium you must pay for those auth services once you're past the free tier limit.

I finally heard back from a company I applied to! It was a rejection, but at least I know that one of these companies exists, and I'm not just throwing my resume into the vast void.

Let me pull down deepseek-v3 into ollama to see if I can run this thing locally. >ollama run deepseek-v3 >sees the model is 404 GB >panic Ctrl-C's Nope, that's not happening.

Meanwhile, deepseek-r1 (7.6B parameters) running locally told me that Go has async/await, and I should have pushed it further to see what code examples it would hallucinate.

I need to tell somebody, so I might as well redirect this to the /dev/null that is my Bluesky followers: I fucking love the glove80. This keyboard has singlehandedly changed my life. I'm not even kidding. No more hand pain; I type more efficiently than ever. I love this thing.

My experience with Google Gemini summed up. (Yes, I know I'm using an experimental model that is probably a bit messed up, given that it's even warning me that it may not work as expected, but... I'm trying to be funny, folks.)

Gemini is now telling me that maybe the feature isn't available to all users and that's why it can't generate the requested image for me. What an excuse, considering it's generated images of people just fine for me before, using the same experimental model. Love that I pay $20/mo for this.
