After spending days designing an authentication system for SMS and social login, I completely understand why services like Auth0 exist. However, I do like the freedom of not having to learn that service's APIs and SDKs and how to get our custom UI to work with those instead of using their UI.

If this app takes off, we don't need to worry about the MAU (monthly active user) premium you must pay for those auth services once you're past the free tier limit.

I don't know why, but handling this all ourselves is conceptually easier to me than trying to work a service like Auth0 into it.
