🌟 Cool new story: #AGING is lost in mis-translation! 🪰 A #Drosophila study shows how mistranslated "bad" proteins can increase #lifespan in mated females. Discover more from @flybehaviour.bsky.social in the October issue of #G3journal about the positive effect of mistranslation: 🔗 buff.ly/WeNNkDF

How quickly can sex chromosomes evolve—and could they help create new species? In mountain pine beetles, young Y chromosomes show dramatic structural change and ongoing gene loss, potentially contributing to reproductive isolation. academic.oup.com/evlett/advan... @g-lagunasrobles.bsky.social

Some glass sponges may be the oldest animals on Earth. Individuals of Monorhaphis chuni are estimated at over 11,000 years old, and they build a single skeletal spike up to 3m long, the largest natural glass structure any animal makes. 🧪 #SpongeThursday #HowToBuildAGiant #marinelife

None of this year's science Nobel Prizes have gone to women. The number of these prizes to go to women remains at 27 out of more than 600. See how many you can name in our quiz: www.nature.com/immersive/d4...

Cool paper on temperature sex-reversing frog species and whether they have greater likelihood of extinction with climate change.

Bibiana Rojas@biobiiana.bsky.social

So proud of Edina Nemesházi for this fantastic work about the consequences of sex reversal for the reproductive success of wild frogs, which is now out in Science Advances! 🥂💥🥳Congrats to all of the authors 👏 @klivvvienna.bsky.social www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel – awarded the 2026 medicine prize – discovered a remarkable protein, channelrhodopsin, in a single-celled alga. Hegemann wondered how Chlamydomonas, a single-celled alga, is able to swim towards a light source.

What an amazing gift from Margaret Atwood to my department!

I love how many weird sexual reproduction things there are. Here’s another one!

Oooh the days of embryo injections to make transgenic flies may soon be over!

Middle aged women: DO NOT GET VACCINES IN YOUR SHOULDER. Have them inject a bit lower. There’s a connection between shoulder injections and serious shoulder injury in women aged 40-60, but most Drs still inject in the shoulder. I personally know *four* women who had this. Spread the word!

The hippocampus is considered the “memory center” of the brain, but these mice without a hippocampus rapidly learn mazes!

I’m proud of my department that a couple of years ago we fired a tenured prof for having a sexual relationship with his grad student. Do not fuck your students.

Jonathan Jarry@jonathanjarry.bsky.social

Do not fuck your students. There is a power imbalance. You have great influence on their future careers and they have little power over you, especially since universities fold themselves into pretzels defending their faculty. Do not fuck your students.

Cool new paper! They find both XY and ZW systems with different species using different sex chromosomes for each.

If you care about academic freedom, but kept silent up until an instance of academic freedom to express racism, then it appears like what you really care about isn’t the academic freedom part.

While both nori & wakame are edible seaweed, they are separated by >1 billion (!) years of evolution. Nori is red algae, which acquired its chloroplasts via primary endosymbiosis; wakame is brown algae, which acquired its chloroplasts from another algae. They are about divergent as human vs yeast.
