my new roommate, flavio bolsonaro, has apparently been going through a difficult time lately and didn't notice that I'm charging him 75% of total rent to sublet a room

i rarely publish anything before hearing from beta readers, but i made an exception for the story i have in this anthology because i simply felt too guilty to show it to my friends. it’s so punishingly grim that i imagined them feeling sad for days after and was like “i'm just gonna submit it” 😋

Folks, in light of resurgent cozy horror discourse, I can promise you that our 2027 release, Cursed Morsels: A Food Systems Horror Anthology, is by far the bleakest thing we've published. I mean, it's doing other things too, but goddamn, is it bleak!

i will be honest, the way many posters on here react to stories of random isolated, cognitively impaired people turning to llms for medical or psychiatric advice & dying as a result is 1.) disgusting, if you ask me; 2.) terrible praxis (if you even care)

Like I guess if your worldview is “yup most social problems can and should be solved by individual action + the rest of society agreeing to be vicious to anyone who suffers or dies because of the social problem” we just have to agree to disagree. If you do NOT think that way about, say, opioid ODs

or people getting lung cancer because they smoked from 1959 to 1974 or whatever…then I would ask you to really interrogate yourself as to why and how you believe this is a wholly different kind of situation.

Like I’m sorry, but if you have a dipshit “Darwin Awards” type reaction to these situations, I don’t ever want you to know me or my loved ones or my life, not bc there’s a lot of LLM use happening, but bc I doubt you’ll react any more compassionately to hearing stories about people ODing

or stories about people doing foolish or bizarre things because they were mentally ill. or stories about people making shitty choices out of just being very naive and trusting/credulous, assuming a safety net must exist where one didn’t, etc.

like you guys understand that the problem with this technology is it’s harmful, it’s dangerous, it’s inadequately regulated, & it’s being shoved down everyone’s throats, right. you understand it’s a systemic problem, not a problem of “nobody has self control/common sense anymore.”

I think what strikes me most about the segments is just that they all seem kinda undercooked? I can imagine any of these being a good v/h/s segment if there’d been more work on the script/plot outline.

i remember this magazine cover! i was sixteen, and in the nebulous zone of "not out per se, not not out per se, nearly everyone who looks at me understands there to be SOMETHING going on, even if it's hard to say what"

In 2005, Time Magazine did a cover story on “The Battle Over Gay Teens.” It’s the same handwringing we see now from “concerned” adults on behalf of young people. “Kids are disclosing their homosexuality with unprecedented regularity–and they are doing so much younger.” time.com/archive/6596...

58. Everyone on the Moon is Essential Personnel by Julian K. Jarboe There is a lot of SUPER WEIRD SHIT happening in these stories, generally queer, often happening in some margin of a capitalist hellscape. Including THE ALL CAPS RANTING CLIMATE CATASTROPHE OF MY DREAMS.

67. LOTE by Shola von Reinhold I CANNOT BE COHERENT IN MY LOVE FOR THIS BOOK. Art & art speak & what art is for & the value of beauty and how we interact with it & also art theory & self-invention & SO MUCH racism. And gatekeeping. SO MUCH GATEKEEPING. I NEED THOUSANDS OF WORDS FOR THIS.

73. An Unkindness of Ghosts by @riverssolomon.bsky.social Speaking of authors who need multiple mentions on this list... Similar themes to Sorrowland mentioned above, but swap out the religious community for a generation ship. Aster is a MAGNIFICENT protagonist. One of my favorite books forever.
