Inside the auditorium is the star installation though. A "tree" made of lighting and projection onto a circular screen above. Below it people on beanbags laze, watching the changing colours. Those of you who saw the Weather Project at the Tate will recognise the vibe.
I can't believe the surveyed British public is entirely made up of "$3600 on candles please help me" meme guys. (Slightly misleading to include "fuel" in the car cost though, and have you seen how much public transport is lately?)
not to pile on £9000 car guy but I wonder if he's more representative than he might seem. "graduate uni, move back in with parents, get first Proper Job and spend 50% of your pay on a Nice Car" seems like it could be a fairly common situation. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Wow, I hate it. I absolutely despise the entitled mentality that, "oh, this isn't behind a paywall, so I must just be able to take it and repurpose it without asking." No! No you can't! You need to ask first before lifting 67,000 of my words for your project!
@bretdevereaux.bsky.social not sure if you're aware of this but apparently someone has set up a substack/podcast network that uses AI to read random blog articles and your series on peasant life is one of them: askwhocastsai.substack.com/p/collection...

This article does not discuss one major reason why chocolate in the West got worse - Ghana and Ivory Coast, the two African countries that are the biggest suppliers of cacao globally, got organised and started demanding fair prices for it. www.reuters.com/world/africa...

Stop what you are doing and look at this lovely story. A photography student in the 80s took pictures of punks and mods on the street in Preston. He’s now tracked them down and photographed them again. The pictures and stories are really ❤️ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I am devastated to learn that Eric Bauza has died. I just spoke with him a couple months ago and I cannot express how joyous it was to have *the Looney Tunes* speaking to *me* and I also cannot express how much it was clear doing the voices brought Bauza joy. www.vulture.com/article/eric...

It is ok to decide that—in the middle of constitutional crisis—that the job of social media is not persuasion, but organization and organization. It is also ok to decide that listening and persuasion does not have to involve violence and abuse. You know why trolls hide under bridges, right?

People abroad don't understand the level of interference Meta & bots had in these elections. 5 days before the election a far-right politician posted a fake news video that got 157 MILLION views on Instagram in 24hs. For reference, GTA 6's reveal trailer got 90 million views on YouTube in 24hs.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

The high street is a place only open 9-5, which means that most employed people with disposable income can't use it. So it got replaced by 24/7 supermarkets and more recently Internet delivery.
The British syndrome, summarised: 78% of us say our high streets are important to us. But only 28% of us actually use their local high street even once a week – and only 53% of people said they used theirs *once a month*. We won't use it, and we won't lose it.

The second story here - someone fined for stopping to read the sign, and the operator going 'well, you should have read the sign that tells you can't stop before you stopped to read the sign' is a bit that even Kafka might have thought too much

Even cooler is: Spielberg watched the godawful dreck, filtered out everything but the visuals, and concluded "this cinematographer is brilliant, I wanna work with him" I remember seeing this in a theater as a young critic and thinking "that's one of the best looking terrible movies I've ever seen"

This is really good news for Serbia, and like Hungary by extension for the rest of us
The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.
Catching up on Genshin plot, and I'm pleased to see it's a proper JRPG: we are indeed going to attack and dethrone Heaven
Version 7.2 "Hour of Ruin" Trailer | Genshin Impact #GenshinImpact #GenshinSnezhnaya I have seen the grave that awaits the world, and I shall show it to the heavens themselves. If we were created only to be destroyed, then let the flames of fury and life be our answer.

My only thought about Cheesecake Factory is that when we went to the one in Union Square in SF, the server greeted us warmly, seated us, and handed us a piece of cardboard so dogeared is appeared to be a piece of environmental storytelling from a Fallout game, informing us of the US rules of tipping
