here is an extremely specific meme that spawned from me trying to rename my computer, and my friends coming up with a banger name for it.

First recorded selfie of a man, circa 1960. He was reported screaming about something called a "mod" not long afterwards.

Was the first person to try a coin operated photobooth that hadn't been in operation since the 1960s.

I kinda hate how it's pretty much impossible to use anything nowadays without accidentally triggering the mandatory AI that nobody asked for and everyone wants to disable.

Like, I get avoiding using llms directly especially with the environmental hazards. But at the same time, large parts of my phone, my default search engine, and even my work app were replaced with AI that doesn't even fucking work half the time. But at least the number went up?

Tried running the new vibecoded epic games launcher on my Cachyos install... I know everyone is clowning on how much of a mess it's probably gonna be, but this is rough even by those standards.

Amending to this, it doesn't let you add separate UE projects for some reason. Just engine installs. This is something I think even the old launcher had support for.

I had a copy of death stranding directors cut installed from the windows egs running in bottles, and it was not picked up automatically. And despite having the ability to apparently detect all steam games and UE projects, they are unable to detect epic games.

It also felt the need to automatically import all my games from steam for some reason? I know this is something gog does as well, but they don't do it by default. Just feels invasive and unnecessary. Nobody's gonna use epic to use steam, focus on being a separate store.

They also automatically picked up my local unreal installs, which I guess is technically nicer. Didn't find my 5.8 build or my capstone project, but they make it easy enough to import those. Fair enough.

Launching was admittedly pretty quick, and I did like how quickly I could login. But that's pretty much where the positives end. In the launcher there's already a bug with what I can only assume is the friends tab where it just shows the raw frame buffer. Looks ugly, feels unpolished.

I spent a long time thinking that the WQXGA advertised on many laptops nowadays was a specific panel or something. Like an LG OLED made for gaming laptops. Turns out it just means 1600p. Why not just say that? Easier to explain and compare...

The video advertising Unity's ew AI-driven autocomplete game maker has 'Mari' who has a game idea they "always wanted to make" and that idea is "Space Corridor" and it looks like this, and that's the strongest argument I can think of for keeping game dev out of the pro-AI crowd's hands.

Today my cats got into a fight. It's not unusual for spats between cats, but Lucia today was so aggressive that I'm legitimately worried for Panini's safety while I'm at school today. Parents are watching over them still, but that doesn't ease the anxiety nearly enough.

Earlier this week I was catching up with a professor I haven't seen since before summer, and he shockingly recommended a PhD to me...

For a bit of context, I'm on my final year of undergrad (currently in capstone) and was considering going into the games masters program at my school because they kinda set you up for it with the bachelor's. The main reason was so I could become an instructor as a backup.

When I told him these plans he mentioned how the games PhD program was quite literally just two semesters away from starting, and said I should consider applying. I have enough contacts who'd be willing to write recommendation letters that I'm genuinely considering.

I have very mixed opinions on the GTA 6 leaks. On the one hand, whoever's behind them is clearly a crypto scammer with no good intentions for the wider fan base. But on the other, it really is hard to feel bad for rockstar considering the shit they've pulled in the past.

Nor should they be allowed to sentence a leaker to life in a mental hospital, he's just a teen and I would argue this is a fate worse than prison cause at least with prison there's some chance of rehabilitation. All of this so they can continue to jack up prices and charge for trailers?

Call me crazy, but I genuinely do not believe that Rockstar has done anything to justify their status in the industry. Good games are one thing, but all of this...

Don't get me wrong, no game should be leaked like this before release, but I also don't think a studio should be allowed to fire workers who are just trying to unionize, branding them with a mark of shame on their work record.

Not that most people following me keep up with this stuff, but cool indie dev who knows their shit in shaders deserves some more eyes.

Beware the kick. #CherubDev #UE5

Sucks hearing the news about kavinsky today. I only listened to a handful of his songs, but I feel bad about not getting into his work more. Especially after learning how involved he was with a ton of other artists I really like.

kinda miss my friends, but most of them are too busy nowadays for anything. and the ones that aren't are kinda sick of my shit, but that's on me honestly.

Chiitan, did you misspell fly or are you air frying yourself golden brown?

I don't think the concept that games need to make money has done as much damage to gaming as the concept that games need to make more money than the previous year. Business and finance are the only fields in the world where infinite growth seems to be a core rule.

Steam deck pricing is utterly insane. Like. I'm glad I got mine years ago, but the fact that we've let things get to the point where hardware that was marketed on affordability is now priced out of relevance is just deranged.

This also comes after finding out the laptop I spent $1,500 on for Christmas got a price hike to $2,400. I hope every AI company crashes and burns and takes their CEOs with them. We don't need any of it, and it's just making everyone's lives worse.
