Wouldn't be surprised if some of this is just anti-establishment backlash aimed at the wrong level of government. Probably a lot of negative sentiment against incumbents because of Ford-driven decline.

Yesterday's municipal elections show the public wants change. I can't recall ever seeing so many incumbent Mayors lose (see below), including in Sarnia and Milton, where the Mayors had been in place since the 1980s.

Tate is going to be even angrier now and, for a while at least, it's important to laugh and laugh loudly at him & his mini edge lord chat room. Same w S'ad in Danforth. She got her angry-man endorsements with Kinsella, but she was a blip at the box. The internet is not real. Keep it that way.

The protected bike lanes along Bloor Street West between Islington and Royal York are gone, but we want to ensure folks in Etobicoke-Lakeshore can safely bike to the polls on Monday. Cycle Toronto will be leading a complimentary bike bus on Election Day through this new gap in our cycling network.

I'm biking down this hill with my kid in the back and a truck slows down beside me. Driver leans over and says, "Are you insane? You should be riding on the sidewalk!" I say, "That's illegal. Did you know that?" Wild idea, should drivers have to know the rules in order to drive?

The election of our discontent, final column. Hardest one to wrote. Had to rewrite it from scratch to get the argument clear. City elections are a catch-all for angst that isn’t directed to the place where change can actually happen. It’s a kind of dysfunction. I hope you’ll read & share it.

Promising to oppose shelters if the “community” isn’t onside is a promise to oppose all shelters.

Matt Elliott@graphicmatt.com

On homelessness, Chow notes Bradford voted against a shelter in Etobicoke. Bradford says he's supported shelters, but will oppose cases where "the work hasn't been done with community, when the consultation hasn't taken place, when we haven't brought the community onside."

Not surprised Bradford pulled a #FlipFlopford with regard to AI data centres. He will say anything to get elected which is why Toronto must #ReElectChow to #StopBradford in four days. #TOpoli

Matt Elliott@graphicmatt.com

On data centres, Bradford says he's supported a "pause" to figure out enviro issues. Chow says she wants a moratorium — "not just a pause" — and knocks Bradford for indicating support for data centres in earlier debates.

Since 2016, London’s cycling network has grown fivefold, from 90 to 450 kilometres. The results? 1.5 million daily cycle journeys—a 43% increase since 2019—twice as many bikes as cars on City of London streets during the day, and motor traffic in steady decline—having fallen 25% in the same period.

Brads commute to/from city hall is mostly on protected cycling infrastructure. As for having a plan, that's the responsibility of the transportation divisions cycling unit and the professionals who work there, not the mayor. Ravine MUTs cost at least 10x more per 100m than building on-road infra.

it's understandable to think of constructive debate as an ideal and then to figure that *any* debate is therefore a step towards political values and virtues. but I think most debates, particularly in the social media age, make conversations and outlooks worse than where they started

Alex Says Stuff@alexsaysstuff.bsky.social

The fetishisation of "debate" as some sort of grand public good that everyone should do is so thoughtless and jarring to me because the more you actually do it the more it becomes apparent that genuinely constructive debate is actually a pretty niche thing.
