Today has completely vindicated my theory that the ordering of sciences by "hardness" is, in fact, an ordering of them by "ease" and the fact that we are so much further in so-called "hard" sciences is a direct result of them being easier (kinda jk)

I posted this years ago on the other site but it's relevant to current news so: When you hear someone use the phrase "you can just do things", "things" means rape, fraud, or both

The hawk-lib side of bluesky is fucking exhausting with their "Russians are ontologically evil" shit. No. We have to enable killing as many Russians as possible as fast as possible because it is an *instrumental* good for blunting a war of aggression. Same with Israel. They don't have evil genes.

now that you mention it, I'd be pretty irritated if I took an hour + prep/post time to interview someone, and then the hiring decision was made because of iced coffee

Where is it if not the training data (or postraining)? Do you think the general purpose transformer is holding secrets inside?

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

You cannot explain the things AIs do - biases they exhibit, choices they make, tendencies they develop, conclusions they draw - by saying "It's in the training data." It's insufficient as an explanation; it disguises what is going on. Demanding this language is demanding that we deceive people.

I did a large amount of exploratory analysis, preliminary modeling, and theoretical grounding work for Epoch on this topic in March and April, with broadly similar top-line results as presented here. This work was done with the agreement I would be credited in the output.

Epoch AI@epochai.bsky.social

AI is getting cheaper more quickly than any other transformative tech in history. At a given level of performance, cost has fallen ~47%/quarter since 2023. That’s 4× faster than DNA sequencing, 6× faster than compute, 18× faster than lithium batteries, and (up to 1973) 54× faster than electricity.

This understanding was re-affirmed when the contract was suddenly ended without explanation in mid-April with additional assurances that it would be published soon including my co-authorship. The specific analysis is meaningfully different, and I haven't fully reviewed this work, but a bit confused

Alright. Let me resolve this once and for all. The simple fact is that there are a few different things that can be reasonably meant by “thinking” and mixing them up is what’s making everyone mad.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

I strongly believe the problem is the opposite. The nonstop efforts to avoid "anthropomorphization" with jargon and overcomplex descriptions have created confusion for laypeople, whereas saying "The LLM understands many subjects; it thought about the math problem and solved it" is clear and true.

yes, computers *can* drive, but not in ways that allows us to port our intellectual, verbal, and policy framework for human driving over into the new realm of automated driving the most useless and obnoxious thing you can do here is get hung up on a binary debate about whether "computers can drive"

I promise there are more drugs at Sty than 90% of what this user considers to be a "bad school"

River_Tam@rivertam.bsky.social

The bad schools have discipline problems. Discipline problems means antisocial behavior. It means kids having sex and doing drugs in the bathrooms. It means fights in the hallway. It means 8th grade boys skeeving on 6th grade girls. It means metal detectors to get into the school.

personally i think isolating people during a potential manic or psychotic event is bad, but what would I know

There should be a “you’re clearly going through it, log off for your own good” type temporary ban. Like, you’re not being punished so much as protected from the humiliation and vulnerability of a public nervous breakdown. It feels vaguely, idk… intrusive or exploitative or something watching it.

I moved to a shitty rural "city" when I was 6. The local districts were one large integrated district with poor-to-middling scores. The other was a functional segregation academy district with better surface level performance. My mom felt strongly I should be in an integrated school regardless.

I think it's good to have these discussions publicly, particularly when it comes to issues around race and lack of academic support from public schools that vary a lot by neighborhood. To distill that to "you've failed your kid and you should hide in shame" makes me sick. It's more complex. Hard.

There's too much to touch on in one thread, but most of all the idea that a failure of a public school to nurture a child is a *personal failing by the parent* grates. Education is a social effort at every level. We can aim to make education succeed for *everyone* not just the kids who have options.

When I was 16, I would've said very similar things. I hated feeling like I wasn't getting any level-appropriate teaching and that I didn't have academic support Today I think it was one of the best parenting choices they ever made. At Princeton I saw what happens when scores and status come first

I don't get the instinct to prioritize "lol, he's coming up with a military justification so he can build the arch" instead of "wow he relly wants more snipers and drones to kill dissidents with huh"

like i know the former has the *cadence* of the savvy liberal know-it-all insider but come on, surely his open thirst to kill civilians in the streets is a bit more pressing?

This thread asserts two similar harms: Destiny is orchestrating smears against Hasan *and vice-versa*. It then says few people know Destiny uses many slurs and is in court for revenge porn. It says Destiny's fans are "very open about" smearing Hasan, but uses passive voice to hedge the other side.

Vibecession Forever@ghazelleberner.bsky.social

If you're a normal person, you may be wondering at this point why you don't really know much about Destiny, or why you don't hear his name. After all, a streamer with a massive audience talking about center left Dem politics seems like he should be more known, right? Two massive problems with that:

The author seems to like Destiny more(?) But, all of the concrete allegations point to Destiny running a weird online revenge mob cult before he's convicted of sex crimes... While Hasan uh, "elevated Mamdani and cheered the Houthis"?? Am I several levels of irony too shallow for this, idgi??

Right this is the type of stuff that started to trickle down to me in 2014/2015ish where I was like, hmm, I fear these people may be losing the plot. EA seemed quite good and nice to me before that.

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

Nick Beckstead, noted longtermist and "effective altruist,” just comes out and says it: "But it now seems more plausible to me that saving a life in a rich country is substantially more important than saving a life in a poor country, other things being equal."

I disassociated with EA in 2017 after Robin Hanson (who ran the ancestor blog of Less Wrong) tried to (in my understanding) groom my ~21 y/o friend over drinks after a Princeton Envision conference. I stayed with her and Robin until we left and nothing explicitly criminal happened to my awareness

Second, Robin's approaches (compliments, invitations, physical closeness) escalated as our conversation became *less* intellectual and *more* personal, as she became more vulnerable, and when I was less available to monitor or help (e.g. when I was physically absent). That's weird if it's mentorship

In the days after I warned many friends, and in the intervening years I've said it publicly on twitter and Bluesky. All this to say, I can show at least some provenance that the allegation hasn't changed. At the time, I rationalized it as an individual predatory creep. I now think it's not isolated

DJ@eschaton-avoidance.bsky.social

also Robin Hanson is a predator

He offered to give a reference for her with other opportunities and people in the space and invited her to visit other such events. When I came back from the restroom a final time, he had moved from across the table to be sitting next to her, at which point I felt that it was safest to take us home.

The pressured drinking and physical closeness are obvious red flags, but at the time, the rest felt like odd overeagerness. A few things make me confident it was intentional grooming. First, my friend was in a notably and visibly unstable place mentally, and she discussed this openly throughout.

However, he encouraged her repeatedly to drink more over the few hours. He kept complimenting her natural intelligence (only that aspect non-stop) disconnected from any particular contextual reason to do so. In her short absences, he gushed to me how rare it is to find a girl with such a mind

It's infuriating that OpenAI—a commercialization of 50+ years of cognitive science, computer science, linguistics, and machine learning research (non-exhaustive)—is eagerly destroying the foundations on which open research can even happen. Musk, Altman, Brockman, etc. are civilizational parasites

tech bsky when... 1. millions of artists have their work stolen to feed closed-source/billionaire-controlled AI: who cares? copyright is the original sin the internet was prophesized to expunge and I'm a radical 90s-era cyberlibertarian 2. it happens to one fields-level mathematician: hey wtf???
