An early-season low will dive southward off CA coast into tomorrow, bringing widespread rainfall to Central Coast (& lesser showers elsewhere). Aided by unusually strong jet overhead, cold air aloft, & record-warm ocean temps, some notable thunderstorm activity is also possible.

NISAR satellite passed over 9 October 2026 magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Azuero Peninsula of Panama about 6 hours after. Maps below are from slant-range and along-track offsets in Urgent Response geocoded offset (GOFF). Fault ruptured to surface, and surface displacements were measured well by GOFF.

Range offsets show the southern peninsula moved east (reddish colors) relative to northern part (bluish colors) along surface rupture with displacements up to 5 meters across fault. Along-track offsets show southern part moved south and northern part moved north expected for strike-slip earthquake.

Update: Now Post-Tropical Storm Rachel has made landfall along northern Baja CA north of Ensenada. San Diego is thus spared brunt, but bands of torrential rainfall & severe thunderstorms are occurring from CA's Imperial Valley eastward into AZ, w/serious flash flood threat. #CAwx

The slow pace of federal research funding under Trump, coupled with his administration’s mass cancellations of existing grants, have led to severe underfunding of research. As another fiscal year under Trump comes to a close on September 30, NOAA, AHRQ, NSF are far behind in money awarded.

Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev footed the bill for hundreds of thousands of dollars of expenses at Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding, including renting out a private island. National security experts say it raises an urgent question: What motivated Kremlev to spend a fortune cultivating the connection?

Recorded and now available, in case you missed it. Since this session ended, the NWS has now issued an Extreme Heat Warning for most or all of coastal SoCal for Wednesday (yes, tomorrow will be even worse) for the genuinely dangerous combination of extreme humidity plus heat.

An El Niño-induced coastally-trapped Kelvin wave will likely raise water levels about 9-14 inches (relative to 1993-2025 averages) along the California coast in early October. Water temperatures will also increase. The sudden increase will be as much as “the entire climate change anomaly in one go”

Lala, now a Category 1 hurricane, looks pretty healthy on radar imagery as it makes a close approach toward Hawaii's Big Island, where it may make landfall (if so, would be first HI landfall since 1992). Either way, widespread and potentially serious flash flooding is expected.

Just when I thought I’d lost my capacity for shock, I am utterly disgusted by this from the NYT, absolutely the worst

Absolutely vile framing from the @nytimes.com. Why doesn’t this leave behind hard questions for the media that hounded him? Or the global right-wing that gleefully turned a local matter into an international incident?

From this review- “Think of all the diligent, decent black academics who have been lumbered with the embarrassment of having Arday as a figurehead” - no, think of *why* black academics are held collectively responsible in ways that white academics are not

I think functionally all of the post-resignation coverage that was about him rather than Cambridge was excessive (e.g. this poisonous review of a book nobody is going to buy - why)

So far, almost 8 months into the year, 11 M≥7 events have occurred. The average is 15/yr. 2010 saw 23 events. 1989 had only 6. Because the last 3 (Indonesia, Columbia and Venezuela) occurred near people, they seem more significant but the Earth really doesn' care where we are.

Dr. Eric J. Fielding, PhD reposted

Outside of local triggering (eg., aftershocks), the global distribution of big earthquakes is random in time. That means there is an average rate (15 M7+ evets/yr) but the time since the last event doesn't matter. Sometimes we see clusters - if there were no clusters, it woldn't be random.
