its funny that of all the games to basically just rip off hollow knight (hollow knight and silksong included) there is only one instance of one (ori 2) being made by a studio that doesnt completely suck ass at designing platformers and it's still by far the best one

the new castlevania really really wants you to know that the devs totally love castlevania from the bottom of their hearts which is of course why they made zero attempt to include any of castlevania's aesthetic or gameplay design

easiest litmus test for if a game is made by a real Castlevania Freak v.s. some guy who played blasphemous is if you have the jump cancel. extremely unsurprised to say belmont's curse fails

i realize i've been tweeting a lot about AI lately but. this is absolutely it. the biggest giveaway someone was really kind of a shitty engineer was always if they viewed raw line output or their typing speed in the editor as their bottleneck. these people now really like AI and it doesn't mean much

Jeff Smith@jeffsmith.bsky.social

The claim is that using AI to code is beneficial because it makes development faster. But typing code is not the bottleneck, it never was. Making decisions is the hard part and something that LLMs are and always will be incapable of doing

this argument only works if you assume AI is the next industrial revolution and we aren't instead basically talking abt uber before they hiked the prices

P(aul) Frazee@pfrazee.com

People who aren’t using AI to code at this point are delusional or lying, trying to ride a horse down the highway and backing up the traffic instead of asking “what can we do to make cars safer and electric.” They have no ethical high ground

surely once the tobacco companies see how much lung cancer they're causing, we the hopelessly addicted smokers will be able to get them to come to their senses

ai companies might even be worse! for tobacco companies all the cancer was an externality, an unfortunate side effect. but for ai companies? destroying your livelihood and leaving you laid off, homeless, and destitute *is the product*!

continuing this analogy to its conclusion, a lot of people stopped using uber when the trip that used to cost $20 now costs $100. but uber continues to exist because suckers who will pay $100 do exist and are high margin. i kinda think AI will end up like this, for suckers, like crypto before it

thinking about this still. even *if* you accept that AI is so revolutionary and awesome everyone gotta use it - the fuck are *you* gonna do to make it "safer" lol! you have no power, the ai companies look at you and see someone already willing to give them lots of money without any concessions!

like was uber more useful than traditional taxis? yeah a bit but not like revolutionarily, esp once you consider the sheer capex. was that utility also accompanied by a lot of theft and social destruction? yeah basically but ppl were often too optimistic to label it as such

so the thought shouldn't be "what if AI becomes like cars again" but instead "is AI actually useful enough for us to keep using it once they hike the prices" and from everything i see and hear the answer is basically no

two trillion dollars spent on gpus and we still haven't really advanced past ELIZA have we

This is amazing; everything is very stupid. futurism.com/artificial-i...

this was one of the most upsetting things to hear visiting them in person, but it's not surprising. old-web libertarians like brewster loooooove crypto, and AI is something they can be just as annoying about while also being a little useful (you gotta realize they spend most of their time doing OCR)

Eniko Fox@enikofox.com

apparently the internet archive is promoting AI bullshit now and i'm just so fucking tired dude

it was actually crazy though. the whiplash listening to brewster kahle give a whole leftist screed about the death of public libraries at the hands of publishers, only for him follow up immediately with "if i could sell the internet archive's entire collection to anthropic i'd do it in a heartbeat"

but hey. never meet your heroes i guess. turns out if you go into a conversation with a """tech thought leader""" and expect critical thinking skills you tend to be disappointed and i mean he was right to say fuck the publishers

kind of funny that of the five great lakes "lake america" is now supposedly the smallest and shittiest one. like damn ontario was doing us a favor taking one for the team

air pollution really must be the best example of the utter perversion of capitalism. industrialists are happy filling the air with tar and killing thousands every year in order to make more money. and this is still such a widespread belief that london was still in this state as recently as 2016!!

Daniel Moser@dmoser.bsky.social

Pollution levels in London after 10 years of advancing sustainable transport.

never forget higher life expectancy was an *accidental* side effect of industrialized medicine. before then life expectancy had actually *decreased* in many places due to air pollution! and the capitalists just said, "that's the cost of progress". i always try to remember this when i read about AI

sorry i don't mean to be so negative. just was surprised this was so stark of a difference comparing against just 2016!! i mean what a victory for the public, right? but i still can't imagine being the person who makes the conscious decision to ruin the air, can you? we can never hate CEOs too much

i feel like we gotta as a society come to grips that just because something is lgbt doesn't mean it's any less reddit

They're transing the devs with new paradigms, call that Haskell Replacement Therapy bsky.app/profile/fast...

one of the most important lessons i learned in my last job is most software is easy, and you can just do stuff. but most engineers in industry have a low opinion of their own capabilities, so they never try in earnest. i think this is primarily what AI preys on

but like, i've absolutely seen engineers churn out giant refactors like rick is describing here on three-week timelines before. i'm not really surprised such a thing is possible. you just had to have the cultural wherewithal and confidence to go do it instead of complaining

so idk. maybe AI is at least making it easier for people to do the unpleasant work? but like. it's just pulling shit from github. it doesn't take three weeks to find a couple github repos as a starting point and glue them together lol. you just have to actually go do it

like. yeah, actually, i don't think before AI it would have been that hard for a determined programmer to reimplement a bunch of shims for a well-documented API like DirectX, especially if you can accept a "buggy and crashy" result. but it *sounds* gnarly, so you'd just assume you can't do it

the AI delusion is that code quality no longer matters and everyone can just fuck around. that means people feel empowered to do things that were easy but they felt were impossible. a big part of this is also the fact AI lets you launder other peoples' github repos but, i don't think it's everything

function calls, monomorphization, and return type inference. pretty close to being able to lower this to the mid-level IR :)

the 'oint32' type here is a 32-bit integer that may have overflowed. this will be used to help later codegen assume overflow doesn't happen (and use int32 without widening), but it's also a valid return type for a function that may have internally overflowed and widened the return value to a float

hopefully will have a bigger demo soon! i think stuff is really coming together but its been a lot of mechanical work specifying how stuff should unify

just a measly 17 times slower than python... my goal is to get this to the point of taking a futamura projection so raw interpreter performance is not that critical. if anything i'm a little surprised i'm not further behind from mit scheme

remembering when minecraft made the jump from intentionally silly "achievements" to progression-enumerating "advancements" and right then and there a huge chunk of the game's soul died

Sebastian Lind@elastiskalinjen.bsky.social

Maybe a hot take, but I often really dislike achievements in games. Why is not playing the game enough satisfaction? Is it for bragging rights? (In game achievements are often better, if they are tied to a challenge and then you get a reward)

i wonder how close you could get to that leftist gamer memes account output by just piping disc horse bot into a random death generator

not enough people out there seem to remember that it doesn't matter whether or not AI is useful for X or Y. it's ontologically evil and you have a moral obligation to work towards destroying it

"ha! i tried to use AI and it wasn't good at thing! how embarrassing!" leaves you in a bad spot if the AI eventually does that thing. instead try "every OpenAI employee should rot in prison for the rest of their life for trying to ruin the world"
