Future “projections” of massive levels of carbon removal are nothing more than a fantasy. And a reckless one at that.

Project Drawdown@projectdrawdown.bsky.social

Novel carbon removal, from Direct Air Capture to enhanced rock weathering, removes just 17 minutes’ worth of our annual emissions. Yet some future climate scenarios project a 15,000-fold increase, with no clear justification for how they arrived at those numbers. Read more: https://bit.ly/48i56Ad

So many critics of Fressoz just skip his main point that "new" technologies are not close to enough to get us within time to zero carbon emissions.

Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

Amazon floodplain forests are vanishing, with a third of historical wetland loss occurring between 2015 and 2024. A new study shows clear boundaries save habitats: recognized Indigenous lands converted just 0.2%, while unmonitored public lands face heavy deforestation. Shanna Hanbury reports.

There is no more normal. Normal was decades ago or centuries even. It is all a slippery shifting baseline since then... Attention to signs is dependent on understanding. Understanding is crafted by action.

At the same time on @edconway.bsky.social substack. Solving electricity demand with low carbon generation is just one part. As Fressoz says it is the easy part.

We also see countries where rapid growth of solar and wind has played a key role in absolutely reducing power sector emissions, not just meeting new demand. The US has seen power sector emissions fall 37%, the EU by 55%, and the UK by 75% since 2005:

BREAKING 📣 For several days, a peaceful protest took place in the morning, after a young child was killed by a car driver. The child was riding his bike to school, the father with him. When will this remarkable growth in sun and wind powered electricity start putting a dent in total GHG emissions? From all the other charts on rising temperatures and risks by @zekehausfather.com it seems we need more of an abolition than a transition.

Zeke Hausfather@zekehausfather.com

Non-hydro renewables (primarily wind and solar) are on track to pass gas this year as the second largest source of electricity generation globally. The rapid over the past 10 years is pretty remarkable! Hat tip to Michael Liebreich for the plot idea.
