I've been car-free since the summer of 2000. It has made all the difference financially, allowing me to take moving and career risks that made life richer. Huge thanks to @cplusc.bsky.social, @americawalks.bsky.social, and Nondrivers Alliance for laying bare the costs of car dependence.

Out today: Our new report shows that car dependence is a burden for people across the US, draining household budgets and leaving drivers feeling trapped. Key stats below 🧵 climateandcommunity.org/research/dri...

Meanwhile, ICE—which 50 percent of Americans want to abolish, and ran on a $6 billion annual budget 10 years ago—has roughly $100 billion in unused funding provided through budget reconciliation. That funding doesn’t have to stay with the agency.

stopgreedbuildgreen.climateandcommunity.orgRerouting Funds from ICE to FEMA to Support Recovery, Not TerrorClimate disasters are getting costlier while the Trump administration guts disaster response. Congress should move money out of ICE and into FEMA to keep communities safe.

Congress can rescind unspent funds and send them to FEMA to provide immediate assistance after disaster declarations. Longer term, FEMA should be made into an independent agency and given the resources and authority to lead a comprehensive federal approach to climate resilience.

In 2024, more than one in five adults in the US reported experiencing economic hardship from disasters or severe weather events. Starting in 2025, FEMA’s workforce shrunk nearly 20 percent, and more than 100 FEMA staff were detailed to ICE.

Community Health Centers serve one in ten US residents, but the One Big Beautiful Bill Act hobbled Medicaid with hundreds of billions in cuts, endangering both CHCs and their patients. Read our analysis and recommendations to supercharge CHCs below 🩺

We propose using reconciliation to double the unsustainable budget of the Community Health Center Fund from $4.6B to $9.2B, on two conditions: 1️⃣ Free care for patients under 200% of the poverty line, including dental and mental health 2️⃣ Solar and battery storage for CHCs most exposed to blackouts.

CHCs serve 32.4 million people at 16,300 sites. They’re also where people turn for help when power outages or climate disasters hit, but if they have backup power, it’s often unreliable. OBBBA could cost those centers $32 billion over five years due to Medicaid cuts.

You can now read the great @moira.bsky.social's contribution to The Reconstruction Papers online: a bold, but practical approach to managing climate-driven property risk that is neither a handout for rich people nor leaves poor people in the lurch, but actively manages the trade-offs.

"The industry’s main solution—deregulation for 'actuarially sound' risk-based pricing—is misguided and ineffective. People's housing choices are constrained by factors like schools, family, jobs, discrimination, and affordability, not just risk price signals." www.liberalcurrents.com/housing-resi...

People are struggling with unaffordable utility bills, falling into debt, and burdened with higher electricity costs due to extreme weather and data center buildout. Congress can erase electricity debt now and bring relief to millions: stopgreedbuildgreen.climateandcommunity.org/posts/erasin...

“Everybody’s getting shut off lately.” Record heat and a rising demand for electricity are closing in on Oklahoma families trying to keep the lights on and the AC running.

We propose increasing SNAP spending by 25 percent to help address food insecurity while raising the income cap to 400 percent of the poverty line. Investments in SNAP more than pay for themselves. Details:

stopgreedbuildgreen.climateandcommunity.orgExpanding SNAP to Make Food a Human RightNearly 48 million people in the US are food insecure, and Congress just cut SNAP by 20 percent. It's time to restore and expand food assistance for everyone who needs it.

In conjunction, agriculture can be made more sustainable by breaking up monopolies, enhancing and enforcing environmental and labor regulations, building up agroecological alternatives, ensuring fair pricing for producers, and redistributing land and power across agriculture and food governance.

Food prices are up 33 percent since 2019, and 4 million people have lost access to SNAP after recent cuts to the program. Meanwhile, the industrial food system is unsustainable and driving the climate crisis—11 percent of US greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture.

We’re proposing a three-pronged approach to lower drug prices for everyone: 1️⃣ Negotiate prices for 50 or more drugs each year 2️⃣ Extend publicly negotiated prices to everyone 3️⃣ Extend the IRA’s inflation rebate to the commercial market

stopgreedbuildgreen.climateandcommunity.orgPrice-Controlling Prescription Drugs To Save People Billions on HealthcareA warming climate is making people sicker as drug prices soar. Expanding government-negotiated drug prices to everyone could save households, businesses, and taxpayers hundreds of billions.

Heat and wildfire smoke worsen health conditions that require medication. People in the US pay about three times what patients in comparable countries pay for the same drugs. Meanwhile, the 20 largest drugmakers took in nearly $900 billion in 2024.

Nearly 20 percent of low-income households have no cooling at all, more than twice the rate of high-income households. This is dangerous: Heat related deaths rose 50 percent from 2000-2020. But staying cool is getting more expensive.

stopgreedbuildgreen.climateandcommunity.orgBuilding a Federal Cool Homes ProgramExtreme heat is making homes dangerous while electricity bills soar. A $35 billion Cool Homes Program would get working families the cooling they need at little or no cost.

We propose that the Department of Energy bulk purchase cooling equipment for households at or below 200 percent of the poverty line, while providing up to $1000 in assistance for eligible households. This would be funded by a windfall profits tax on the fossil fuel industry. Details:

Utilities requested $31 billion in rate increases last year alone. Meanwhile, arrears on energy bills are averaging $789—up 32 percent from 2022. Three core drivers are data center proliferation, oil and gas price fluctuations, and climate instability.

This is how you do durable climate policy.

Climate change is financially burdening people in everyday life. Policy can quickly cut costs and deliver relief from the worst economic fallout of the climate crisis, from unaffordable food to extreme heat. I think we don't talk enough about how car dependency sucks for everyone, including drivers, who don't actually want to live in constant fear of a $400 repair or to have to buy their kid an SUV the minute they turn 16 so they're not stuck chauffeuring them everywhere. Love when surveys confirm it!

Decarbonizing the economy will be a long-term process, but people need help in the here and now. Immediate relief is not only about putting money back in people’s pockets, it can also be a whole-of-economy approach that deals with how environmental instability shows up in everyday life.

To meet this moment, we've created policy proposals to take on climate and economic issues at the same time. These policies can deliver immediate relief across the spectrum of everyday life in the areas where people are intensely feeling the effects of the climate crisis.

stopgreedbuildgreen.climateandcommunity.orgImmediate ReliefWorking people are struggling with an affordability crisis as climate change makes life more expensive, difficult, and unstable. From skyrocketing electricity…

In our approach, climate is not an add-on or afterthought to piecemeal affordability measures or marginal changes. Climate policy should alleviate pain points where people need help, from their healthcare to their cooling costs.

From skyrocketing electricity costs due to historic heat waves, to rising home insurance rates in the wake of extreme weather, to increasing gas prices due to fossil fuel volatility, the climate crisis is making an already untenable economic situation even worse.
