You can’t look at what’s happening in Memphis, the gerrymandering and the onerous use of federal and state forces, and not think of Callais. It’s a disaster for the South. And the people of Memphis know it. Look at these quotes. Think of Fred Dorse.

Taking a different angle on this: fascism is an international movement and liberalism should be too—and always has been!

Yes well it does require things like “empathy” and possessing a basic understanding that all of our lives are interconnected

correct states further down the path of autocracy than us have had those autocracies overthrown by sufficiently large voting numbers recently we can do it here too

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Totally. That's a big unknown. There's some stuff on what happens if this comes to a government shutdown toward the end:

Love to see them already thinking along these lines, though I'm curious how this will play out against an administration that will walk right into a government shutdown before signing budget/appropriations bills it doesn't like

NEWS --> Dems are planning novel ways to wield power of the purse against Trump's corrupt prosecutions of critics like Ilhan Omar if they win House. Reps Pramila Jayapal and Jamie Raskin tell me a range of aggressive tactics will be deployed. Details in my new piece: newrepublic.com/article/2171...

But even if you don't care about Israelis, I don't think people appreciate just how much this kind of democratic backsliding influences policy and geopolitics. People who do not believe voting matters and that their representatives answer to them do not produce good governments.

on the internet people will call almost anything liberalism. war with iraq, death by firing squad, npic infighting, everything. so a few weeks ago at liberal currents, we put out a challenge to all the editors: what is liberalism, actually? today we get our first essay, from lc founder adam gurri:

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

“What I will offer you instead is something simpler, and perhaps harder: a vision of life under liberalism, as distinct from the political project.” www.liberalcurrents.com/liberalism-i...

Another one. The premise: Young people are cutting off their parents for minor mistakes and misunderstandings. The lead anecdote: A woman severs ties with her family for refusing to get vaccinated before her wedding — to a man who *lost his mother and brother to COVID*

This is also a huge black eye for Marco Rubio too, who has wanted to reshape Latin America into right-leaning governments

bluesky and politics discourse in america generally lives in the eternal now. it is occasionally good to step outside of one's time and see the world in longer view: even this shall pass, though not without loss.

"America was pushed into its second nadir by a well-funded anti-democratic movement that spent several decades building the social and legal infrastructure of American fascism. Digging ourselves out of the competitive authoritarian pit will likely be a slow process."

I personally found my way out of the overly reductive cognitive biases way of thinking and talking through Hans-George Gadamer, whose philosophy was fundamentally about how the way we orient ourselves to one another and meaningful works/texts determines whether we can truly understand or learn
