Maturing as a software engineer doesn’t mean writing fewer Horrors, it means knowing when to write A Horror and how to construct the proper containment zone around it
I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries

every millisecond you spend trying to “automate” the remediation of a service that’s exceeded its design criteria is wasted energy that could have been spent improving the system
When I hear about “AI SRE” startups (products hoping to automate oncall so no dev gets woken up at 2am): Putting in more work so stuff works so you don’t get paged at 2am is what we have today. Should we get more AI and less feedback systems reliability could get a lot worse

Dropped out of college due to rotating credential requirements and only going part time due to funds. Got my A+ cert, worked at an MSP overnights, taught myself coding to handle repeat requests. Dug more into system design, got promoted, repeat until principal.
What the heck none of you guys have STEM degrees?

Oh neat, I created a list so you can start blocking people on it. bsky.app/profile/eahr...
Why is it whenever I read a rat/EA writing, all I can think of is a dude in a shitty fedora at thanksgiving saying "Maternal unit, can you please pass the sodium chloride?? I need to season my avian dinosaur"
This just isn’t true at all: “The sixth virtue is empiricism. The roots of knowledge are in observation and its fruit is prediction. What tree grows without roots?”
I 100% agree here, learning how to handle rejection (especially as an autistic man) is paramount to growing and becoming a better human. Therapy helps with this.
it’s also a shame in that I can truly see the value of teaching a workshop to men on “what do you do if you’ve been called a creep,” except that I somehow don’t think these are the right *people* to teach such a workshop in the slightest

The only way I can describe Yud is that he was that 15 year old that used to get straight A's in elementary school, then got really into smoking weed and watching Rick and Morty.
I don’t want to be a dick. But having read a few things by this Yudkowsky guy and now seeing that he left school in middle school and didn’t go to high school or college I think I’m understanding the situation a lot better, or things at least seem to fit.

May go back to uni to get my specialized PhD
No one gets a PhD in "what if the people in charge of the Pentagon are chud idiots and they collapse the world economy because caring about strategy is Woke and Gay". But that is (self-evidently) a far more likely thing to happen, simply because it only requires stupidity to accomplish.
And here I am saying dumb shit for free, these doofuses get to do it on the company dime.
Air gapping apparently wouldn't work in alignment tests because, I shit you not according to this OpenAI guy, one computer could run the CPU hot and tell the other airgapped one it is in trouble. I wish I could get paid $10m a year to say the stupidest cybersecurity thing you've ever heard
