Do you like VIS/HCI/programming interfaces? Do you care about critical visualization? Or perhaps building dynamic data interfaces? Perhaps some combo therein? If so! I'm hiring for Ph.D. student to work with me at UBC starting Fall 2027! You should apply! www.mcnutt.in#/hiring-26

New preprint with Robert Atkey. This paper recasts Galois slicing (a program slicing technique) as a kind of automatic differentiation, with lattices of slices corresponding to tangent spaces, and forward and backward slicing corresponding to forward- and reverse-mode AD. arxiv.org/abs/2511.09203

arxiv.orgGalois Slicing as Automatic DifferentiationGalois slicing is a technique for program slicing for provenance, developed by Perera and collaborators. Galois slicing aims to explain program executions by demonstrating how to track approximations ...

Main claim: functionally speaking (and in contrast to the usual materialist line about the Cartesian Theatre), things do “come together for the persual of a Central Meaner” — not as a static representation but as a dynamic capability. Our capacity to behave about the content is the representation.

Excited to be speaking on Subjectivity as Self-Simulation: Virtualising the Cartesian Theatre at the AGI 2025 Philosophy and Machine Consciousness workshop. Even more buzzed to see @annaciaunica.bsky.social and @drmichaellevin.bsky.social just announced as invited speakers! agi-conf.org/2025/ 🤯

Introducing The Darwin Gödel Machine sakana.ai/dgm The Darwin Gödel Machine is a self-improving agent that can modify its own code. Inspired by evolution, we maintain an expanding lineage of agent variants, allowing for open-ended exploration of the vast design space of such self-improving agents.

What’s wrong about IIT is closely related to what’s wrong about the Hard Problem. There is no Hard Problem of consciousness that science needs to solve. Science only needs to explain why it seems like there’s a Hard Problem. But that’s a non-Hard problem, by definition.

The basic problem with IIT is that it takes our intuitions about consciousness and treats the content of those intuitions as the observable to be explained. But the actual observable to be explained is simply the fact that we have intuitions with that content. Explaining that would cover all bases.

I love that a human artifact is a full light-day away

About fifty years ago, NASA strapped a message in a bottle to a rocket and flung it into the deep dark It wasn’t supposed to go this far, but it did. Long past its mission, it’s still out there so far away now that a simple hello takes a day to reach it, and another day to hear if it says hello back

For example, it becomes possible for a web extension to turn any web page into a spatial canvas and start deconstructing it!

𝕮@chrisshank.com

The next evolution of the <folk-shape> element is custom HTML attribute that lets you spatially manipulate HTML elements. If no position or height/width it will auto-detect those values to you can seamlessly transition between intrinsic and manually-controlled sizing/position.

Something depressing (and possibly inaccurate) about a CS conference pitching itself as “radical, visionary and open” but only having 3 female PC members out of a total of 23.

I love the work of Pierre Dragicevic et al on “multiverses” as a form of research transparency. But multiverses are at play even within a single computation, in the form of different instances of the same subcomputation – each seeing a different part of the input and acting differently as a result.
