I shared a deep dive into how new authors can get tripped up by “show, don’t tell.” Read my tips on how to “show” in your novel & when “telling” is actually necessary for the story

Today is the first day of Banned Books Week.
I thought I'd share one of my favorite books that I read in school, Fahrenheit 451.
Highly recommend, it was way ahead of its time.
Banned for swearing, being "blasphemous" & anti-authoritarian, & tackling sensitive topics.

I wanted to share this from @sfwa.bsky.social on "A Special Warning: Fake Literary Agent Scams"and how to spot them, as I have been receiving scam emails and some of them are clearly AI slop regurgitating my bio/book covers, but one of them read and looked like a real agent sfwa.org/other-resour...
'Generative AI will be the death of the self-publishing market as we know it, as ‘novelists’ and single ‘authors’ are churning out hundreds of books a year and purposefully do not disclose their use of GenAI to readers...' @doubleedgedpress.comdoubleedgedpress.com/self-publish...
I published a short story this year in @uncannymagazine.bsky.social that I'm really proud of. It's about the attention economy, flavors of provocation, and what a superhero would even look like if it was invented today.
It starts with a dare.

"Carmilla" by Sheridan Le Fanu is coming this October in a gorgeous leather-bound special limited edition from Lyra's Books. I made 14 illustrations that are hand-tipped into each copy. This was a dream project, and I can't wait to share more info in the coming weeks!

Authors, besides the fact that, you know, your cover artists deserve credit by default, another good reason to prominently name your cover artist is that it makes it clear you hired a human rather than using gen ai.
Which is extremely important to quite a lot of readers, actually.
Here's a great example of a debut indie author giving credit to their cover artist/illustrator in a prominent way. Did it play into my decision to sign up for an ARC? Absolutely!
And when the author emailed me that ARC? He even included a link to the artist's Instagram! Now that's giving credit

I want comments on what the next review should be on... a contemporary murder mystery in Alaskan solitude, a contemporary southern gothic horror-mystery, a contemporary urban fantasy, a scifi thriller, or a classic along the lines of 100 Years of Solitude theforgottenfiction.com/fiction-book...

I have been writing anywhere I could squat, sit, or stand - from halfway across the world and in between - but tonight’s the first time I’ve sat at my desk to work in a few weeks+. Life’s been so damn hard and also incredibly generous (especially in this project). Good things are comin’. #writing
