To those who don't know me yet, hello! I'm a writer with a fantasy novel in progress, a few short pieces you can find on my website, and a book blog as well. My favorite genres are fantasy, sci-fi, and classics, although I like to mix it up sometimes! Follow for lots of book-related goodness 💙📚

In honor of Ace Week, I've been catching up. Specifically learning about the flag redesign released earlier this year on Substack, Instagram, and Facebook (which I missed because I'm not on any of these) If you're in the same boat, I'm attaching links to the articles I found most helpful to explain

To me, it seems that the redesign is a result of the evolution of the asexual community and intended to make everyone feel represented, including those who didn't feel represented by the old design I mostly read books to learn, but I'm glad I spent some time reading on the internet today 😁

First, an explanation of how the old design came to be, which also mentions how there eventually came to be criticism of the white stripe I like that this was written by someone who was a part of the community at the time and witnessed this asexualagenda.wordpress.com/2018/02/21/t...

Just finished the second story in Never Whistle at Night (White Hills by Rebecca Roanhorse). Not the type of story I expected to find in this collection, but it got me with the twist. Absolutely chilling 💙📚

As we're well and truly into spooky season, I've started reading Never Whistle at Night! I read the first story (Kusktuka by Mathilda Zeller) before bed last night and can confirm it made me scared for the main character in more ways than one 🫣 Great start! 💙📚

It's sad that this will only be playing in select theaters. I don't watch movies very often, but I would have strongly considered going to the theater for this one if it was playing anywhere near me. As a sidenote: I highly recommend the memoir! judithheumann.com/publications...

Don't mind me. Just adding books to my wishlist because a friend recommended them but they're not available from my library system. I don't want to buy more books right now, but I also want to make it easy to buy them later 😆

This is really good so far! The author started in the right place to help the reader really understand her later thoughts and decisions while also being able to view them critically. And getting the sense that the author herself is critical of some in hindsight! ~100 pages in, and I'm invested 💙📚

There is no moral obligation to finish a book at the expense of your well-being. As book club reads The Revelation of Dionne Daphne, I’m reflecting on Black women readers’ conversations about reader care. I stand ten toes down on the power of literature. But not every book is for everyone. #books

I should not have to do an internet search to find out how to cancel a service when I'm logged into my account on the website for that service provider and have spent the past five minutes searching for that very information

I'm already 156 pages in, and I keep stopping only because I need to do other things, like eat and sleep. Absolutely fascinating so far, and I only just got to the murder mentioned in the description! 💙📚

New library book! I wanted to try a mystery/thriller for October 💙📚

"How I wound up reading Speak: There’s a simple answer here, and one that perfectly explains why it makes me so angry to see this book on the list of bans. I wound up reading Speak because I was browsing in the Young Adult section of the library" 💙📚 shannonfallon.com/2024/09/28/o...

shannonfallon.comOn Banning Laurie Halse Anderson’s SpeakI was recently reading through PEN America’s Index of School Book Bans for the 2022 – 2023 school year to see all the books included on it. This task ended up taking about three times longer …

Or if you'd rather support authors whose books aren't even being given enough publicity to end up at the top of the banned list, I also have books I highly recommend by asexual and disabled authors. They're not part of the sale, but book banners would still hate them! bookshop.org/shop/shannon...

I'd like to once again remind you for #BannedBooksWeek that Huckleberry Finn and Animal Farm don't need you to go out of your way to read them. Instead, support a book, and author, who a ban can actually hurt.

This book is off to a good start! Pretty funny that this dragon thinks humans are "full of kidneys". I guess he hasn't eaten many 😆 💙📚🪐

If you want a sample of this book, here's a short video of the author reading the prologue! 💙📚🪐 www.youtube.com/shorts/QZP0o...

I was a beta reader for this book. So excited to see that it's about to be published at last! 💙📚 www.youtube.com/shorts/WI5Lg...

October TBR - The Dragon Has Some Complaints by John Wiswell (Humorous Fantasy) - Marbles by Ellen Forney (Graphic Memoir) - Something else? I'd like to continue the Stormlight Archive series, but, like last month, I don't know if I'll have the time 💙📚

My September reading wrap-up is smaller than usual because it excludes the two editing related books where I only read the parts that were useful to me Still, these two novels made a good accompaniment! 💙📚

"some teachers were still telling students to insert punctuation wherever pauses would occur... While rhetorical punctuation—punctuation to show how words should be read aloud—has its place even today, it is confined to contexts in which structure neither requires nor proscribes punctuation."

Quote from Line by Line: How to Edit Your Own Writing by Claire Kehrwald Cook I wasn't taught this "rule" myself, but I know others who were. Equating commas to pauses was probably intended to make learning easier, but it seems to me it's only led to more confusion over commas! #writing

Yet another way that AI is being used to trick people into believing lies while leeching off the honest work of others... If Amazon doesn't care enough to fix the problem, sadly we all need to do the work of spreading awareness

I've finished reading The Grand Paloma Resort already! Fast paced with morally complex characters and a lot to say about the tourism industry in countries like the Dominican Republic. A great read for Hispanic Heritage Month or any other time! 💙📚

I can already tell this is going to be a quick read. It's one of those books where, once you get started, you need to know how it all turns out! 💙📚

New library book! Not my usual genre, but the luxury resort setting from the perspective of the staff intrigues me 💙📚

Part two of "Forget what you learned in school". I had a high school teacher who took points off if we ever started a sentence with "however". The author of this book read my mind that I was remembering exactly that as I read! #writing #editing

Shannon Fallon@shannonfallon.com

Somebody tell my old grade school teachers: "You can too start a sentence with 'but'! Even this communications expert says so!" #writing

I've finished reading Hunchback, and I have mixed feelings. It's very well-written and thought provoking, but some of it seems provocative for the sake of being provocative. As if the author believed it wouldn't sell any copies otherwise. Which, I suppose if true is thought-provoking in itself 🤔 💙📚

I think there are some amateur critics out there who need to read this. And yes, I did just use a "to be" verb (Passage from Line by Line: How to Edit Your Own Writing by Claire Kehrwald Cook) #writing

I didn't realize when I picked up this book that it hasn't been updated since 1985. 😬 Now that I look, reviews seem mixed between "this is an evergreen classic on editing" and "language has changed in the last forty years". I guess I'm about to see which camp I agree with as I dive in 💙📚

"I believe he is of [my kind];—I am sure he is—I feel akin to him—I understand the language of his countenance and movements: though rank and wealth sever us widely, I have something in my brain and heart, in my blood and nerves, that assimilates me mentally to him." - Jane Eyre #SundaySentence

Because my library system doesn't have a physical copy of this book, I put a hold on the audiobook. Almost five months later, it's finally available for me to borrow! 💙📚
