I keep wondering whether the Democrats have a project 2029. If they do regain the presidency, will they spend the first two years simply prosecuting the previous administration's corruption? Or will they also get things done? They will have a very, very big job to get things back on track.

Edward Luce@edwardluce.bsky.social

When the next US Congress investigates corruption, Trump's oil-deal-of-the-century with Alejandro Betancourt, the face of Venezuelan corruption, should be top of its list. Two kleptocracies working together. Brilliant essay by @anneapplebaum.wsocial.eu www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

I want to agree with this, but democracy is so much more than elections. It's the institutions and culture that goes around them. It's the way that complex collective choices are debated, decided and challenged. Those are the things that have become more fragile - and I have yet to see that change.

Rob Ford@robfordmancs.bsky.social

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

I also maintain that elections can be one of the most undemocratic tools. So, once every 5 years a bunch of people get picked - and have power for 5 years with little scrutiny and real accountability. You didn't vote for them? Tough luck. They don't do what they said/what you voted for? Tough luck.

Urgh. It doesn't surprise me at all. It's just galling how utterly guileless and crass this all is. And how little will be done about it.

I disagree. I think the silent majority agree with and support the students. I think you underestimate how much the French hate authority. It's a country built on revolution and this isn't the first time that students have taken action.

Albert Pinto@70sbachchan.bsky.social

Sad but inevitable. Whether the student movements in France end up inadvertently strengthening the “silent majority“ in favour of law and order is an open question. France’s Le pen - already leading in polls - would then be the beneficiary in next years elections. www.ft.com/content/bcb6...

I also think that people can see that it's a small minority of troublemakers - some of whom are possibly false flag actors and certainly not representative of the movement as a whole.

From where I sit, it feels like foreign press is spinning a very different narrative and focusing on the violence and damage. Social media and french sources tell a more nuanced story

Accountability. That's what underpins professional engineering. You sign off on something, you are responsible for it. It doesn't work, it breaks the law, it kills someone - you are liable.

This remains true: it is not an engineering discipline. It's just deploying shoddy systems in inappropriate contexts, ignorant of (or sometimes reveling in) the externalized harms. What would it take to start doing engineering? Construct validity, adversarial audits, robust governance, and more.
