If you’re using rustls, upgrade to rustls-webpki 0.103.16 and/or webpki-roots or webpki-root-certs 1.0.10.

Filippo Valsorda@filippo.abyssdomain.expert

Update everything that verifies certificates against public roots.

OxiSH does not support compression. We’ll see if someone really needs it, but will definitely keep it disabled by default.

We found a new compression side-channel attack against SSH: if you use port forwarding with terminal sessions, a web attacker+eavesdropper can recover a sudo pwd in a few hundred trials. There is only one compression context for all channels. Accepted at CCS 26, preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2609.07709

That means we've managed to release ~once per month on average; I released 0.23.44 on Monday to add support for post-quantum ML-DSA certificates. Meanwhile, we're hard at work on 0.24, which will come with meaningful performance improvements and a more robust API. Excited about the next 10 years!

Four months after the initial batch of advisories came through, our team of two volunteers finally fixed (almost) all of them. RustSec advisories coming soon, but at this volume it might take a bit of time.

I've been working on OxiSH in my spare time for 20 months, targeting a modular design with modern cryptography. Would be happy to get your feedback on this project!

So when are we going to make AI code get a handle on wildly overwrought commenting. One easy way to spot under-reviewed vibecoding is comments that are oddly verbosely fixated on one particular minor implementation feature (because that’s the most recent thing that was worked on)

On my trusty M1 Max, a tiny test crate with graviola 0.4 as its single dependency runs clean `cargo check` 1.31x faster than with sha2 0.11, and clean `cargo build` 1.11x faster.

Shitty personal attacks in a blog post are one thing, but when people reply “now I like zig even more” really makes me wonder what went wrong in our communities.

We're making good progress on upki, our collaboration with the rustls project to bring browser-grade web PKI capabilities to low level system utilities. #Canonical made a PPA available so you can try out upki in #Ubuntu. Give it a go and let us know! discourse.ubuntu.com/t/try-the-up...

graviola is amazing and more people should use it.

I released Graviola 0.4.0 yesterday, with a new and quite quick ML-KEM-768 implementation. More perf work to do on this, but it is already quicker than libcrux-ml-kem, and competitive with mlkem-native on ARM64. And still builds mega fast! Consider supporting this work on github.com/sponsors/ctz

We're excited to share that Firefox now uses zlib-rs for gzip (de)compression. This has both performance and safety advantages, but it took a while to get zlib-rs into production. Read why: trifectatech.org/blog/zlib-rs... Thanks to @gabrielesvelto.mas.to.ap.brid.gy and @mozilla.org #rustlang

I'm excited to share what I've been working on with @erikjee.bsky.social: RustNL's #rustlang Maintainers Fund! Many people and companies contributing to Rust, but there are fewer and fewer paid positions for general maintenance (reviews, cleanups, etc). We need to fix that. bsky.app/profile/rust...
