Jackdaw: a decision for last century. climateuncensored.com/jackdaw-a-de... A hastily drafted post following the UK Govt’s decision to approve further drilling & production at the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea. Please excuse typos, non-sequiturs, etc - I wanted to get the post online today.

Chancellor John Healey says a new "Energy Wealth Fund", using tax revenue from oil and gas extraction, will invest in "green transition" There was no need to increase the problems caused by drilling to allow the end goal of going green to be reached. This is such a stupid statement

The bad arguments that the gov have made to defend Jackdaw (and potentially Rosebank) are the same bad arguments for continuing with new fossil projects. If Jackdaw is good ("homegrown gas"), why is the next new gas field bad? The gov's position is now worryingly unclear.
Earlier this summer, leading climate experts called on the government to use the decisions on Jackdaw and Rosebank to develop a roadmap to ‘defossilise’ the economy. If these projects are approved, make it clear they’re the last. Where’s that plan? www.businessgreen.com/news/4534641...

Public ownership of water is way better than privatisation. Here's why. Andy Burnham MUST block the Thames Water bailout and bring it into public ownership. Sign the petition NOW: vist.ly/5pavf

Jackdaw won't cut your bill. The gas sells on a world market, so drilling here doesn't change what you pay. What would: public investment in homegrown renewables, paid for by the government that issues the pound. #MMT #UKGreenParty #Economics #UKPolitics #UKEconomics

Unless you work in strategic defence planning you probably won't realise what horror this truly means. Even at a mid-century global average of 1.8°C it means enough pressure on governance systems and authorities to 'collapse' states, magnify civil violence and fuel many more armed conflicts.

The Labour government of @andyburnham.bsky.social and @miattafahnbulleh.bsky.social should hide their faces in shame. Britain can never again claim to lead the way on climate action after this highly irresponsible message to the global oil & gas industry that business as usual is OK. It is not.

This is truly pathetic from Ministers. Labour’s claim to more than 27 new Jackdaw jobs doesn’t hold up. The green economy is >£100bn a year and growing fast. There is no future in fossil fuels. The Government knows this, but chooses profit for Shell over protecting our climate.

Catastrophic misjudgement by the UK government. The financial arguments are bogus. They'd quickly make far more for the public purse if they created a publicly owned solar and wind power industry whose profits were for the treasury and to do more renewables. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cw...

Today's decision by Labour to approve new drilling in the North Sea is climate vandalism. It's a betrayal of all of our futures, and Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change. This is a victory for Shell over the people. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cw...
