>we have a radical new system to replace capitalism >is it a new system or is it feudalism? >it’s a good system sir *looks inside* >it’s feudalism

Dr. Samantha Hancox-Li@sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com

looked at in longer perspective, it's striking how much this resembles the premodern system of exclusion, rents, and personalist connections, which was--and this part's important--radically worse than the modern system of impersonal rules and general taxation

Just hung a huge banner outside my house saying "HURRAH FOR THE GREEN PARTY MOTION", after seeing the news that the party no longer opposes nuclear energy! Now to take a big gulp of organic kombucha and check what else the conference has been voting on. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

I love Labour Party Conference so much Where else do you casually bump into a Minister of Defence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, or see thousands of policy nerds squeezing their brain juices to the last drop to make the country better

…or get to ask a panel including a minister an extremely niche question on mixed oxide nuclear fuel (great answers btw)

we have passed a threshold where i am comfortable saying that the left *must* be using and leveraging AI it can be done responsibly there’s no going back, and to avoid or reject this technology at this point would be a massive generational mistake that lets the far right take further control

dame@dame.is

between the state department beginning to criminalize technology use on the left and the left’s decision to stigmatize technology use within its own ranks, the far right is positioning itself to maintain an upper-hand unless we do something about it

I wrote a(nother) thing! This time it is about how no amount of military technical excellence can salvage a situation where political leadership has, in their abject strategic incompetence, demanded the military accomplish an impossible mission. Gift link: foreignpolicy.com/2026/08/21/i...

SE Gyges@segyges.bsky.social

So the rationalist tribe has been losing its war for money and attention in the space to EA and Anthropic for a while, and they are getting more desperate, and it kind of seems like Aella specifically is effectively the cultural leader of rationalism right now.

This really should be bigger news. Most important driver on long-term changes in living standards is productivity and recent revision to how it is measured suggests output per hour actually grew almost twice as fast from 2009 to 2019 (up from 0.7% a year to 1.3% a year)

Chris Giles@chrisgiles.ft.com

Anyway, (for various complicated reasons due to survey quality) the upshot is measured annual UK productivity per hour since the GFC will be revised up from 1.1% to 1.3%

insane how much good will, longstanding trust, and real business 1Password is willing to destroy just so they can donate some money to a racist project — this is such a catastrophically dumb move that should’ve been a no brainer to walk back within the first 12 hours

The Verge@theverge.com

In an internal Slack message obtained by The Verge, 1Password’s Karimov downplayed the overtly racist comments from DHH, telling staff the following: www.theverge.com/tech/988536/...

When Cambodia and Thailand had their border dispute last year, Thai forces bombed scam centers that were operating inside Cambodia

Dr. Samantha Hancox-Li@sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com

sorry but like "slave compound in disputed junta territory uses hyper-advanced satellite communications to scam retirees in nearby megacountry, which is also for some reason the chief state sponsor of the junta" is some pure cyberpunk madness

I can finally talk about this, 3 years later... github.com/tailscale/ta... It's a library + CLI tool that's like netcat, but over Tailscale's data plane without any control plane (no accounts, no dependence on Tailscale the company, all open source) WireGuard + NAT traversal without IP addresses.

The usual phrase I use when putting things like the Avdiivka Offensive into perspective during my talks is "the Russians deployed the entire USMC on a 25 KM front. After four months of fighting, they attempted to use the entire French mechanized force to exploit the breach they created."

New immigration stats show that the numbers of asylum seekers in hotels is down to 16k - falling 50% in a year. Small boat crossings down 23% in the year to June. Numbers waiting for initial decision down from almost 180k to 40k.

It's incredibly annoying that the vacuum where the understanding of what Palantir does should be is filled with absolute dross. It's nearly inevitable that it will be like that, because practically no one writing about Palantir saw problems they solve and systems they build.

It only takes a look at the Horizon scandal to see just how complex and error-prone large-scale systems can be. That's a system that's much simpler, has less data, not subjected to nation-state attacks, and is not life-and-death critical. NHS's FDP is much higher stakes.

What kind of organisation operates under similar constraints and has money to procure complex digital systems (that can then be generalised for other users)? Militaries. But sure, it's just hypermasculine fantasies with no substance.

Journalists and general commentariat never had to deal with thirty years of messy records across paper and several half-done digital systems. They never had to think how complex just authentication and auditing can be, because the extent of their experience is entering password on a web page.

So what does one do when they have zero understanding of what a company does? - talk about vibes - draw parallels - infer intents It's just dross and no one reading this learns anything new. Worse than that, it's anti-knowledge: the reader is *further* from understanding than before.

Even more depressingly, we can just get rid of drivers and not have hundreds of reported but unprosecuted rapes and sexual offences every year (from content.tfl.gov.uk/tph-sexual-o... ) Unfortunately because vibes we'd rather talk about imagined harms than the actual, observed harms

Alex Hern@hern.bsky.social

find this extremely depressing. don't know if people have convinced themselves this is dangerous because they hate AI, or if people have decided they don't care about safety because they hate AI giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

They are doing the usual framing of "DoD can't get an audit with a clean opinion therefore no one has any idea where literally any of the money is going or being spent," when the reality is we know how every dollar is spent and say so publicly

Dan Groshev reposted

Replying to @dmvjjvmd.bsky.social

the issue with the audit is traceability everyone knows where all the money is going (if we didn't the appropriators would raise holy hell), the problem is being able to account for every dollar throughout the entire life cycle of that dollar, through depreciation and ultimate disposal

Love those insights from our intelligentsia/media/political class' ticks and circumstances Another example: a large chunk of the housing discourse can be explained by how almost no one writing publicly from an office in London could afford their own home on their income alone

lastpositivist.bsky.social@lastpositivist.bsky.social

Just massive, *massive*, amounts of political life in the UK is explained by the extremely bizarre fact that our intelligentsia, political class, and even much of our business elite, feel aching insecure about faiilng to meet some imagined ideal of Authenticity they attribute to the volk.
