Former Marylander, once Chicagoan, current Evanstonian, always Coloradan, but every now and then you can catch my original Texas drawl. Discovering joy in a new place.
President Trump wants to build a 250-foot-tall arch.
If completed, it will cast shadows on many graves and monuments in nearby Arlington National Cemetery, the @washingtonpost.com's 3-D analysis found.
On some days, Trump's arch would even shade the grave and eternal flame of JFK.
"What happened to salad cream and whitebait and pickled herring and steamed puddings?" I think you answered your own question, sir. "Are croissants really all we want from our bakeries?" If the entire world is any guide, yes. That is what all humans want.
Have you noticed that pumpkins are a little on the small side this year? 🎃
Some growers, particularly in Southern England, have reported smaller crops, likely due to this summer’s severe drought.
Ebola outbreak in Congo has reached 10,000 confirmed cases, government data showed Tuesday, as health authorities race to slow the spread of the disease in multiple African countries.

While on a train traveling between airport terminals, saw this ICE agent traveling as well, and snapped a photo of his arm patch. If you need evidence that the federal government now has a military presence in America, this is it. #NeverForget#ICE#ncpol

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
An early look at forecast high temperatures on Halloween shows well above normal departures in shades of pumpkin orange across much of the central and eastern U.S. Check your local forecast at weather.gov
I’ve been wanting to write about this for a while — I don’t think US consumers know what a “qualcomm” is and what it does for their cars.
And because of that, I think that is partially why U.S.-market infotainment is generally complete ass
Chinese auto reviews dont even start with powertain specs anymore, straight into processing power, cockpit OS, lidar type etc.
Processing power now more important than horse power to consumers
Huh. Lived in DC for 25 years. Ate in lots of 'fancy ' restaurants but strangely never witnessed this.
One exception: my local pizza joint, Comet, got shot up by a conspiracy-addled dude who thought Hilary Clinton was trafficing kids in the (non-existent) basement. Dude was surely a Trump voter.
Trump on DC: "Nobody wanted to eat out. They were afraid. Even if you were in the restaurant, people would walk in and like the Wild West, 'Hold it up!' Everybody is standing there. Can you imagine? A fancy restaurant. They were robbing the whole restaurant. It's crazy."
Never attribute to malice what you can attribute to laziness. As someone who spent a decade in political communications and corporate PR, the straight answer is that either she or her reps reached out to the NYT and offered to provide quotes. And lazy reporters gratefully accepted the offer.
Also, I'd love to know how two different stories -- each written by three reporters, with no overlap in the authors -- managed to find Jolene Riessen and make her the stand-in for apolitical Iowa farmers.
Everything is too expensive, but we have an opportunity in 8 days on Election Day to win real change for working families and create an economy and country that we all can afford.
Vote - early, if possible.
The NBA has reached deals with Kalshi and Polymarket to make them the league's preferred prediction markets partners. The companies can now use NBA IP on their platforms, while the NBA gets right of approval on markets that they offer. That and more:

I have said it before, and I will say it again: the UK countryside is full of interdimensional portals. All you have to do is keep your eyes open and look carefully for them... tomcox.substack.com/p/20-of-the-...

This month some colleagues and I spoke with 75 people—mostly found at random—in North Carolina and Georgia.
Here is how we found the electorate:
The determined v. the disappointed.
