I've been trying this thing today where I actually use my terminal instead of asking Claude to do it. I even looked at the help text for a utility! It was neat.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

I've been banging this drum for years now, I know, but Zohran's Big Night is a clear illustration of the power of giving people a vision of the future that boldly contradicts the rhetoric of Republican fearmongers. Not just "disagrees on policies," but actively paints a different image of the world.

if you’ve recently traveled into or out of the US and had any unusual interactions with CBP, i’d like to hear about them (regardless of immigration status—citizens, permanent residents, visa holders) email: gaby @ the verge dot com, i’m also on signal ✨

Am I the only one who has to restart my Mac after screen sharing using *any* app? The purple “you are screen sharing” icon never goes away otherwise and other stuff breaks.

This is the latest person decreed by Marco Rubio to be a foreign policy threat and thus now subject to deportation:

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

Important: They're now trying to deport *another* student, 21-year-old Yunseo Chung, a legal permanent resident, under the statute authorizing SecState to remove people deemed threat. She's lived here since childhood. Rubio is at the center of many of Trump's most lawless and destructive actions.

His mother says he has been tortured by authorities at the airport. The reason, if any, for his detention is not known.

Back in the mid-20th century, the FBI could place an individual under surveillance solely for being LGBTQ. This is what enabled the anti-queer witch hunts of the McCarthy era. Now, DHS permits surveillance of LGBTQ people again. Just being queer makes you a suspect. www.advocate.com/politics/dhs...

What does it mean for something to be Turing complete? I answer this question, and more, through a series of fully interactive Turing machine simulations! Play, pause, step forwards and backwards, and even write your own Turing machine programs in my latest blog post. samwho.dev/turing-machi...

Setting up a Chromebook for my kid. It’s asking me to set up an email for him (alright), then asks his name, DOB, and gender. Yeah, no thanks. Going to install Edubuntu instead.

welp, I just had the most idiotic LLM moment ever. I asked Perplexity how to use sysbench in Docker and one of the sources was my own blog post about how to do exactly that

The most important thing I’ve learned about communicating in an age of lots of lies is that pre-bunking is basically the only thing that works. Give people ammunition against misinformation, but do not tell them that you’re doing that.

I’ve been feeling like I should limit my daily Anki study to 50/day because, truly, whenever it builds up I carry around micro stress all day

Andy Matuschak@andymatuschak.org

A friend asks: after a hiatus of a few months, how to apologize to an Anki deck? It feels "angry" now! I wrote: I totally get you. Here's the thing: the Anki deck has been mistreated—but not by you!
