Just watched the new #Avatar Aang movie and ... it's not good? It felt like an off-brand version of itself. The animation and character design is really good. And they got a number of creators from the TV series. But the voice cast is wrong, so much so that nobody sounds like themself - /1

- especially Toph, which is a shame because it felt like her voice contradicted her characterization. Without sharing spoilers, there was a whole chunk where it felt like another franchise entirely - like I was suddenly watching Dragon Ball or Ganondorf maybe? And my lament is: /2

They went to the trouble of making a movie. They got a number of the original creators on board. But what came out wasn't funny or touching or meaningful. And it could've been. I'm not in this space, but I think something's wrong with the creative process for shows right now. ☹️ /3

I just attended this workshop (remotely) and learned a lot about using marginal effects to make sense of regression output. Kudos to Vincent for making a powerful package with an easy to use interface 😊

I'll be in Ann Arbor next week to talk about `marginaleffects` and how to interpret statistical models. Let me know if you're around! pdhp.isr.umich.edu/workshops/ #RStats #PyData

Quite amazing and brave. Hawaii’s top court has basically declared SCOTUS to be so compromised—so blinded by racism and loyalty to big money —it can be openly ignored by the state.

Every time I hear people talk about trusting chatbots, the Molly Weasley in my head scolds, "never trust something that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain." 🧵 1/3

Nevermind that it's been ~18 yrs since I've read Harry Potter or that I can't remember the specifics of the quote (was it Arthur? did it show up in the movie adaptation?) -- my point is, it works. It reminds me to be skeptical of the damn things. 🧵 2/3

I use (a), because I tend to think it's easier to type an age than to find it from a list of available options, and as long as the validation works (i.e. I don't have to clean up a bunch of text responses), I'm happy to aggregate/bin the data later if needed. What do y'all do? And why? 😄

MIT Technology Review asked me to review Stewart Brand's new book _Maintenance: Of Everything_, vol. 1. I went into it with a lot of questions, including about how he'd deal with labor, politics, and social structure. It's a lot worse than I expected. www.technologyreview.com/2026/04/17/1...

technologyreview.comThe case for fixing everythingA new book by Stewart Brand, an architect of modern tech culture, asks: How do we prioritize maintenance? And why? But it doesn’t quite have the answers.

As a kid, I got to Celadon City, and they had a Game Corner! And like, Team Rocket was a crime organization, and I was taught not to gamble IRL, but clearly they were diversifying their business interests, and clearly it was working.

Even after discovering the Rocket Hideout (that you access FROM THE GAME CORNER) it was like, well, they already owned the building, and they had to build a Hideout *somewhere,* so I guess this makes sense. GUYS. GUYS IT WAS A FRONT THE WHOLE TIME. #pokemon #leafgreen #teamrocket

This is so promising! My office makes reports and we've largely switched to HTML due to accessibility concerns. With tools like this, we might be able to give PDF reports to clients who prefer them. The pkg overview video in this blog post is really helpful.

My guess is that somebody brought quicksand into the Bermuda Triangle and they canceled each other out. And that's why I don't hear much about those dangers anymore. Anyway, happy new year.

I need you to know that your contribution, your voice, your perspective, your way of explaining something, YOUR whatever, is valuable. Just because "it's been done before" doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. Nothing is new, everything's been done! But not by you. Yet. #databs #rststs #python

I agree with a lot of this, especially that the AI bros calling it "PhD level intelligence" shows a fundamental lack of understanding about what intelligence is. On that topic, see the original post. But slightly on a tangent: while we're having this conversation, we need to avoid the false 1/

Would I go to college again? Yes. But I've seen enough blindingly intelligent people without PhDs (and a handful of "meh" people with them) to know that "PhD level intelligence" ... isn't entirely a function of having a PhD. 6/

And the more we discuss the humanness of intelligence, the ways we can see and cultivate it, The more it becomes blindingly obvious that (a) we deserve better out of our education system, and (b) AI isn't all it's cracked up to be. end/

And frankly, dissertations suck. If you wrote one, you should definitely be proud of getting through the research, the red tape, the revisions, the pages and pages of writing. It's a feat. But I don't delude myself that I would be more intelligent if I had written one. 4/

Should we encourage people to learn to write more clearly? Yes. To read? Definitely. To collaborate? Absolutely. To develop a passion? Of course. Is college or a PhD the best place to do that? I'm not sure. It's a good one, but it's not the dream I was led to believe it would be. 5/

dichotomy of "intelligence as regurgitating facts" vs "intelligence as an ability honed in college, especially during a PhD." As someone who just left a PhD program (and works with lots of folks with PhDs): we can't be holding the PhD up as the pinnacle of intelligence. 2/

Do I think better, write more clearly, know more facts, and have more empathy than when I started my PhD? Yes. Did school help develop those things? Absolutely. But a PhD is only one way to structure the effort, rigor, care, and feedback that lead to intelligence (however we define it) 3/

"PhD-level experts in your back pocket" is a completely nonsensical description of AI but a pretty good description of social media if you follow the right people

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

Serious shout out to these reps because organizing at least 51 out of 62 people to do something that risks fines and threats of arrest is not nothing, especially now. Red state reps go so hard. 💖

Per the @texastribune.org, a sufficient number of Dems in the Texas state House are headed out of state to break quorum, which would at least temporarily deprive Republicans of the ability to pass a new gerrymander. (At least 51 of 62 Dems need to be absent.)
