My single favorite piece of Bernie Wrightson art? Probably this shot of a Werewolf from Swamp Thing. When I write werewolves, I see this one in my head.

Surprise! THE COLLECTIVE is one you probably missed. Written as "Jack Rogan," back in print for the first time! Cover art by Peter Bergting, design by Errick Nunnally. Out now in HC and ebook from my little imprint, Mystic Monkey Press!

Studio Days with Wrightson, Jones, Smith, and Kaluta. The book and the artists were a huge influence one me as a young artist.

It is the birthday of Bernie Wrightson, possibly the finest artist in the history of Horror comics. I'm going to read through some of the stories in his legendary run on DC's SWAMP THING and then admire some of the art shot full-size from the originals in the artifact edition.

John Jakes' 'Ghoul's Garden' first appeared in Flashing Swords Vol 2, and the story even scored a Frank Frazetta cover.

Tonight's reread is GHOUL'S GARDEN. a Brak adventure by John Jakes. This collection has nifty black & white interior illustrations by Doug Beekman.

Not this Brak.

Sometimes when I'm flipping through old sketchbooks (like more than 20 years old) I'll come across something I have no memory of drawing or why I drew it, like random dwarves or characters from the Wizard of Oz books.

Our latest Conan event mini-series, Tides of the Tyrant-King, just hit the halfway mark with our second issue released last week. What did the critics think? Read on and find out: www.jimzub.com/conan-tides-...

Lovely page from Barry Windsor Smith's unfinished 'Freebooters' series. The concept was brilliant. Imagine that Conan finally settled down, bought an inn, and went to seed and you're pretty much there.

In flashbacks the out of shape but still dangerous innkeeper is pretty obviously Conan as Barry drew him for Marvel.

The evening's inspirational reading. I'm writing Gothic Sword & Sorcery while the night-winds whisper and the darkness presses against the windows.

After reading some of Robert Bloch's early fiction now I want to read about his early days as a writer. I enjoy this book, but I hope they eventually found the author of this unauthorized autobiography.

After watching two adaptations of Robert Bloch's 'Weird Tailor' I decided to read some Bloch, so I took him to breakfast this morning.

I bought this book mostly for the Lin Carter intro because I already had a different edition, but when it showed up it was signed.

Excellent. I just brewed some coffee so time for third cup with Brian Keene. I've actually had coffee with Brian more than once when we were the only people awake at a con...

Yikes, me and James R. Tuck 12 years back at a signing for @delilahsdawson.bsky.social and @kevinhearne.bsky.social . Everyone kept saying we looked more like bouncers than writers. I've lost more than 60 pounds since then and James more than that.

We had both worked security, so they weren't entirely wrong.

dOne of the Robert Bloch stories adapted for ASYLUM was 'The Weird Tailor'. When it was previously adapted for Boris Karloff's THRILLER, the show made mention of Bloch's Cthulhu Mythos grimoire, De Vermis Mysteriis, as far as I know, the first mention of a mythos book on television.

The book is not identified by name in the film. I was watching for it.

Today's movie was Asylum, a British horror portmanteau film from 1972. Three stories with a framing sequence acting as a fourth tale. The practical effects hold up and there are some good jolts and genuine moments of horror.

I had already watched and enjoyed 'Dr. Terror's House of Horrors, and now I need to watch 'Torture Garden' and 'The House that Dripped Blood.' Great cast too, with Peter Cushing, Barry Morse, Britt Eklund, and Charlotte Rampling

Written by Robert Bloch, with the segments based on four of his short stories, it's a gruesome good time

It's a Karl Edward Wagner sort of morning here, writing sword & sorcery with horror at its heart.

Tonight I'm doing something different for Friday Night Frights. Decided my Halloween season was missing some DARK SHADOWS.I decided to pick up with Episode 835 where Julia Hoffman and Elliot Stokes witness the disappearance of Barnabas Collins physical form while he's in a trance visiting the past.

Julia decides she has to go after Barnaba to 1897 and try and reset the timeline. I watched the series through twice, but it's been a while since I visited this section, and really I can watch pretty much any of it. Get 'em, Julia.

I don't actually remember. I think it was 'The Silencers' a Matt Helm movie with Dean Martin. I was 4 so I could be wrong.

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

Stuff I'm reading.

But we wants them, yes precious...

The 'vibe' I'm going for in recent sword & sorcery work.

People often talk about the importance of Frank Frazetta's covers for selling the Conan books. I think Michael Whelan's Elric covers and Jeff Jones' covers for Fafhrd and the Mouser are also vital.I'd never heard of Moorcock or Leiber, but when I saw those covers back in the 70s,I had to have them.

I woke up at 2:00 but was able to doze back off, which resulted in a bunch of weird dreams, none of which I remember well, but they were weird. I know at one point I was looking at some really cool ALIEN comics, which never actually existed

Yes, I even dream about comic books.

Illustration by Sebastián Cabrol for my Kharrn story, A Shadow Against the Stars. Done for the anthology, Occult Detective Quarterly Presents. Just a gorgeous piece of work.

This was a life-altering comic for me. The title says it all. Like when Star Wars ends, what does Luke Skywalker do? Just go back to his room on the rebel base and wash his socks? Steve Gerber made me look at the human side of heroes, even the ones who weren't human.

I still think about this when I write. @briankeene.bsky.social gets it.

Good Week for Conan at Dr. No's Comics. My weekly pick was @jimzub.com's TIDES OF THE TYRANT KING mini series issue #2, and a new issue of SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN:REFORGED. Plus the new paperback of @timlebbon.bsky.social's SONGS OF THE SLAIN, and a reorder of CONAN THE NOMAD by Zub and Alex Horley.
