Totalitarians need scape goats. 1984's Daily Hate manufactured its own enemy. Different groups are singled out for hatred by fascists each time. In Salem witchcraft was the thing. For Nazis it was the Jews. McCarthyism held communists responsible for all evil. MAGA is going after the scientists.

I could get on board with a lot of this. Would probably keep the Elizabeth and Victoria towers too, but my heresey is that the gothic revival bit of the Palace is mostly Not a Good Building

Ben Barclay@benbarclay.bsky.social

Save Westminster Hall, demolish the rest of the monstrosity, reclaim a narrow strip along the river for the general public, sell the bit behind that to the highest bidder, and build a new parliament somewhere nice and central with good transport links. Castle Donnington? [Ducks]

Ed Davey, "Elon Musk has applied to sell energy in this country" "When someone is calling for the overthrow of a democratically elected government, we should take that seriously" "I don't think Elon Musk is a fit and proper person for us to do business with"

Jacqui Smith called Musk's comments "dangerous and wrong" & "wholly unacceptable" on calling for violence. After a wobbly weekend, the pressure to notice what was said and to respond has got the government to an important baseline

LibDem leader @eddavey.libdems.org.uk has a focus on how significant Musk's call for violence was. I would like to see a strong cross-party response.

If any American is wondering why your tourism numbers are down this year, this may help to explain it.

Horrors of Trump detention centre: Lisburn man tells his story after arrest for 'looking like a Mexican' Lee Stinton was lifted by US immigration police on an American street — in an incident he compared to a kidnapping. Here, he tells us his story.

Which reminds me, it's that time of year again for National Trust members to vote. The easiest way is to use the 'quick vote' to keep out the traditionalist 'Restore Trust' candidates. secure.cesvotes.com/V3-3-0/nt25/... 1/2

Pres Trump gave Vladimir Putin until today to come to the negotiating table with Pres Zelenskiy. He hasn’t. Trump says he’s ’very disappointed’, but doesn’t seem to be planning to take any action to persuade him to talk peace…

Deeply shocked by Israel’s deliberate killing of the Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, his colleague Mohammed Qreiqeh and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa. Israel has now killed at least 186 journalists in this war.

Ha ha ha. Tr**p imposes his deadline tariffs and he still thinks they're paid by the exporting country. Not one of his tame gimps has the bottle to tell him he's wrong, probably because they're stupid cowards. US inflation is gonna go bigly.

Tax Havens are a con they shouldn't exist, you shouldn't be allowed to say properties in the UK are actually in a tax haven in the Cayman Islands and then dodge all the tax earned on them. But you can, and it is costing you a fortune.

As a young reporter in Northern Ireland I twice saw kids squirming on the ground in agony after being shot in the knees by the IRA. The memory still haunts me. Kneecap should be free to sing whatever they want - but why do they choose to celebrate such a vicious form of torture?

I decided to become a journalist aged fifteen after reading ‘1984’ and being appalled at the thought that governments could rewrite history. Orwell knew the USSR did it. Now China pretends the Tiananmen massacre didn’t happen. It did. I was there, and saw it for myself.

100s of new MPs were elected last July from ALL parties. The House of Commons is v.different. They’re working hard on lots of issues in parliament. Many are impressive (pop parl channel on to see) yet broadcast media gives them little coverage. Sign petition petition.parliament.uk/petitions/71...

Nice solution. There's a startup in the usa that connects your house to a public charging pole outside. The house owner gets a fee if someone else uses it and just pays his own tariff when he uses it.

Replying to @signal.org

One piece of misinfo we need to address is the claim that there are ‘vulnerabilities’ in Signal. This isn’t accurate. Reporting on a Pentagon advisory memo appears to be at the heart of the misunderstanding: npr.org/2025/03/25/n.... 2/
